PIONEER SOFTBALL SPLITS FIRST TWO GAMES OF NFCA FIRST PITCH CLASSIC

IRVING, TX—Texas Woman's University (10-7) blanked Southwestern Oklahoma State (4-8), 9-0, to begin their play in the NFCA/Schutt Sports Division II Leadoff Classic, then Western New Mexico (12-0) handed the Pioneers a 9-1 loss to end the first day of competition. Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX/Grayson C.C.) shined for TWU on the day as she went 1 for 4 with a homerun and two RBI against SWOSU and 2 for 3 with another RBI against WNMU.

TWU started putting runs on the board early in their game against Southwestern Oklahoma State. Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) led off the game with a single and made it to third base after a sacrifice bunt by Sascha Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) and a passed ball by the Lady Bulldogs' catcher. In the next at-bat, Jennifer Collins connected with her first homerun of the season, a two-run shot that went over the left center field fence and scored Flores. The Pioneers were up 3-0 when they added five more runs in the top of the third inning. Starting pitcher Dawn England (Graham, TX/Graham H.S.) slapped a RBI-single through the middle of the infield with two runners on to start the scoring. Stefani Easter (Troy, TX/Sam Houston State) hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the next at-bat to bring home Courtney Martin (Lake Dallas, TX/Lake Dallas H.S.), then Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro College) ran out an infield single to allow England to score from third base. Flores came around to bat a second time and knocked in Boudreaux with a RBI-single to the shortstop. Flores ended the rally in the third when she came around to score off an error by the Lady Bulldogs' second baseman. The Pioneers added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Flores hit a RBI-single to deep center field. England retired the final three batters to end the game after five innings and moved her record to 7-1 on the season by pitching a two-hit shutout while striking out six batters.

The Pioneers started their second game of the day much like the first with Flores leading off with a single. Collins batted Flores into score when she hit a single up the middle of the field. TWU held onto their one-run lead through three innings until Western New Mexico exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth. The Mustangs added three more runs in the top of the sixth and starting pitcher Angela Slaugh struck out the final three Pioneer batters to end the game after six innings. Slaugh finished the game with 12 strikeouts and allowed only one run off of six hits. Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) recorded the loss by allowing six runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Chambless' record now stands at 2-2 on the season.

Next up, the Pioneers face Washburn University at 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 1 in the second day of the NFCA/Schutt Sports Division II Leadoff Classic. The teams will be divided into three brackets after 1:30 p.m. games are concluded with play to continue on Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
