PIONEER SOFTBALL FINISHES WITH 3-1 RECORD AT
ST. EDWARD'S TOURNAMENT

AUSTIN, TX—After rain cancelled play in the St. Edward's Softball Classic on Friday, Texas Woman's University (9-6) blanked Ouachita Baptist, 15-0, and South Carolina-Spartanburg, 9-0, late Saturday night. The Pioneers won a 6-1 decision over tournament host St. Edward's early Sunday morning, then lost to Lone Star Conference South Division rival Texas A&M University-Kingsville, 4-,2 to close out the tournament. Junior shortstop Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) went 11 of 16 from the plate for a .688 batting average with two doubles, one triple, six runs scored and three RBI in the tournament.

In their game against Ouachita Baptist, Teresa Flores, Jami Ingram (Richmond, BC/ Blinn College) and Courtney Martin (Lake Dallas, TX/Lake Dallas H.S.) all tripled in the first inning as TWU scored six runs in the first inning. In the bottom of the second inning, Jennifer Collins (Euless, TX/Grayson C.C.) recorded the Pioneers fourth triple of the game and started an eight run inning, which put TWU out in front 14-0. Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX/Navarro College) scored another run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a passed ball while Dawn England (Graham, TX/ Graham H.S.) allowed only two hits and struck out eight batters to record her fifth victory of the season. The four triples by TWU in the game breaks the old school record of three recorded against Prairie View A&M on March 11, 1997.

The Pioneers held a slim 1-0 lead through four innings of play against South Carolina-Spartanburg before they exploded for four runs in the top of the fifth. Ingram doubled with two outs and runners on second and third to score to runs. Amanda Arnold (Lewisville, TX/The Colony H.S.) doubled in the next at-bat to move Ingram over to third base, then Sarah White hit a two-RBI single to make the score 5-0. TWU added four runs in the top of the sixth to win the game 9-0 while Devin Blew (Crowley, TX/Crowley H.S.) allowed only three hits and struck out three to record her first victory of the season.

At 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, TWU scored six runs on 12 hits to beat St. Edward's University. Jennifer Collins doubled in the bottom of the first inning to score Sascha Taylor, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. TWU added four runs in the fourth inning, then blew the game open in the sixth when they recorded three runs. Nikki Boudreaux used a sacrifice bunt to score Megan Helms (Krum, TX/Krum H.S.) from third to begin the scoring. Two batters later, Sascha Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) hit an RBI-single to score Amanda Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville HS). Collins recorded her second RBI of the game when she hit a single, allowing Flores to cross the plate. England retired the final three batters to record the 6-1 win. England improved her record to 6-1, allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven.

TWU opened up the scoring early in their final game against Texas A&M-Kingsville when Collins singled, scoring Flores from third base. The Javelinas added a run in the bottom of the first inning, then took the lead, 2-1, in the second when Kassie Rezza connected on a RBI-single. TAMU-K pitcher's Meaghan King and Robyn Jensen combined to keep the Pioneers scoreless for four innings until Stephanie Easter (Troy, TX/Sam Houston State) reached base on an error by the shortstop, allowing Courtney Martin to score from third base in the top of the sixth. The Javelinas added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning and Meaghan King retired the all three TWU batters in the seventh to record the 4-2 win. Chambless recorded her first loss of the season, moving her record to 2-1 after allowing four runs on three hits.

Next up, the Pioneers host Lone Star Conference North Division member Cameron in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 25 beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
