PIONEER
SOFTBALL SPLITS THEIR FINAL TWO GAMES OF
LSC FIRST PITCH
CLASSIC
IRVING,
TXTexas Woman's University (3-4) handed
East Central (0-3) an 11-2 loss in the first game,
then fell to Southeastern Oklahoma State (3-1) 3-1 in the nightcap
to end the Lone Star Conference First Pitch Classic. Senior
catcher Jami Ingram (Richmond, B.C./Blinn College) had
another big day as she hit two doubles and batted in four runs
in the Pioneers victory over ECU.
Overall, this was a productive weekend. Our hitting
was consistent in all four games and there are just a few things
that we need to work on defense and base running, head
coach Dianne Baker said. We could have won both games
that we lost, but I feel good about how the team played this
weekend. We are looking forward to opening up with our first
home game this Tuesday against Oklahoma Panhandle State.
The Pioneers started their first game off in style as they
put three runs on the board in the first inning. Jami Ingram
put two runs across the plate when she hit her first double
of the day, a ball that went all the way to the fence in right
center. Freshman Sarah White (Lewisville, TX/Lewisville
H.S.) brought Ingram around to score two batters later
when she connected on a RBI-single down the right field line.
East Central added a run in the bottom of the first, but TWU
starting pitcher Dawn England (Graham, TX/Graham H.S.) held
the Lady Tigers scoreless through the next five innings. The
Pioneers had a commanding 6-1 lead going into the seventh inning
when they exploded for five more runs. Jennifer Collins
(Euless, TX/Grayson C.C.) led off the seventh with a
double. In the next at-bat, Ingram doubled down the left field
line to score Collins. After Amanda Arnold (Lewisville,
TX/Lewisville H.S.) got on base, White hit a hard shot
to the East Central third baseman, which allowed Ingram and
Arnold to cross the bag. Two batters later, White scored on
a sacrifice bunt from Nikki Boudreaux (West, TX/Navarro
College). Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller
H.S.) hit a RBI-single in the next at-bat to give TWU an
11-1 lead. East Central added another run in the bottom of
the seventh, but that was all the production they could muster.
England moved her record to 3-1 on the season as she went seven
full innings and allowed two runs off of seven hits while striking
out five.
The poor weather conditions finally caught up with the Pioneers
in game two as their bats went silent against Southeastern
Oklahoma. The Lady Savages drew first blood in the bottom of
the first when Christina Armstrong hit a RBI-single with no
outs. TWU starting pitcher Devin Blew (Crowley, TX/Crowley
H.S.) got out of the first inning with only one run, but
allowed two more in the third when Kimberly Nichols scored
on an error by Pioneer catcher Stefani Easter (Troy, TX/Sam
Houston State) and Christina Cearley slapped an RBI-single.
Amanda Arnold got the Pioneers on the board in the top of the
fourth when she doubled to right center field, scoring Jennifer
Collins. Lady Savage starting pitcher Christina Cearley allowed
only one TWU hit in the final three innings to ice the victory,
3-1. Blew earned the loss after allowing three runs on two
hits in five innings of work.
Next up, the Pioneers open up their 2003 home schedule with
a double header against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Tuesday,
Feb. 18. The first game will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Pioneer
Field.
