PIONEER
SOFTBALL FALLS TO CAMERON, REBOUNDS AGAINST NO. 24 CENTRAL
OKLAHOMA
IRVING,
TXIn the first day of the Lone Star Conference
First Pitch Classic, Texas Woman's University (2-4) was sluggish
in a 3-1 loss to Cameron University (3-0), but their bats woke
up as they run-ruled #24 University of Central Oklahoma (0-2)
13-5. The Pioneers hit a combined .535 in the victory over
UCO with sophomore catcher Stefani Easter (Troy, TX/Sam
Houston State) going 2 of 4 from the plate with two triples
and four RBI.
In the first game, the girls didn't have any energy.
We made some bad calls in our base running and it probably
cost us the game, head coach Dianne Baker said. One
thing I love about this team is that they are not a bunch of
quitters and don't get down on themselves. They came back strong
in game two and beat a very good Central Oklahoma team.
In game one, it was a pitchers dual in the early going as
Cameron's Lyndsey Williams and TWU's Dawn England (Graham,
TX/Graham H.S.) allowed a combined three hits in the
first three innings. The Lady Aggies broke the scoreless tie
in the bottom of the fourth when Lindsey Remington scored on
an error by Jami Ingram (Richmond, B.C./Blinn College). Cameron
added to its lead in the fifth after Cheryl Wyrick and Lindsey
Remington both connected on RBI-singles. Ingram finally got
TWU on the board when she hit her third homerun of the season,
a 230-foot blast that went over the left center field fence.
Cameron's relief pitcher, Crystal Smith, got the final three
outs in the seventh to preserve the 3-1 victory. Smith was
the winning pitcher as she went 3 2/3 innings and allowed three
hits and one earned run. England recorded her first loss of
the season after allowing six hits and three runs in 4 1/3
innings of work.
TWU scored quickly in game two against Central Oklahoma when Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) led off with
a triple in the top of the first, then came around to score
when Sascha Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) slapped
an RBI-single in the infield. After the Lady Bronchos took
a 2-1 lead, the Pioneers exploded for four runs in the top
of the second inning. Stefani Easter batted in two runs with
her first triple of the game with only one out. Flores connected
on her second triple of the game in the next at-bat to score
Easter, then Taylor added another RBI-single to her numbers
to bring Flores home, making the score 5-2. Easter's second
triple came in the top of the third inning as she knocked
in two more runs to give TWU an 8-2 lead. Central Oklahoma
was not done yet as they scored three runs in the bottom
half of the third, but could not get a runner across the
plate the rest of the way. The Pioneers scored five more
runs in the fourth and fifth innings and Amanda Chambless
(Collinsville, TX/Collinsville H.S.) pitched three
shutout innings to earn the victory, 13-5. Chambless did
not allow a hit in 11 batters faced and struck out two to
record her first collegiate win. The Lady Bronchos Jamie
Schiedt earned the loss after allowing five runs on six hits
in two innings of work.
Notable
performances for the Pioneers on the day were Taylor going
3 of 4 from the plate with two RBI, one run scored
and a stolen base against UCO while Flores went 3 for
5 with two runs and an RBI during both games. England
struck out a season-high seven batters in the loss to Cameron
and Amanda Arnold (Lewisville, TX/ Lewisville H.S.) combined
for four hits in five at-bats with a RBI in both outings.
Next up, the Pioneers play East Central University at 10:00
a.m. and Southeastern Oklahoma State at 2:00 p.m. to finish
up the Lone Star Conference First Pitch Classic. All games
are being played at Southwest Park in Irving, Texas.
