PIONEER
SOFTBALL STILL .500 AFTER SECOND DAY OF
LAS VEGAS CLASSIC
LAS
VEGAS, NVThe
Texas Woman's University Pioneer softball team (2-2) scored
seven runs against No. 21 Alabama-Huntsville
(3-0), but it was not enough as the Chargers won game one 12-7.
In the Pioneers' second game, Dawn England (Graham, TX/Graham
H.S.) pitched seven scoreless innings to help lead TWU
to a 4-0 victory over Fort Lewis College.
It was a slugfest against Alabama-Huntsville in game
one. Usually, if a team scores seven runs, they win the game
but that didn't happen. Our pitching was not as good as yesterday
and we couldn't stop them from scoring, head coach Dianne
Baker said. The team regrouped against Fort Lewis and
played well in the win. Right now, we are beating the teams
we are supposed to beat. The girls are playing great defense
so far in the tournament, but our hitting comes and goes.
Alabama-Huntsville
took an early 3-0 lead after one half inning when Sara Winn
scored a run and Kristi Braverman knocked a
two-run homer out of the park. In the bottom of the first, Sascha
Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) singled Teresa
Flores (Corpus Christi, TX/Miller H.S.) home, then Taylor
scored from third on a wild pitch making the score 3-2. The
game was tied at 5-5 after four innings when Alabama-Huntsville
blew the game open in the top of the fifth with four runs.
Freshman Amanda Arnold (Lewisville, TX/Lewisville H.S.) stole
home while fellow classmate Courtney Martin (Lake Dallas,
TX/Lake Dallas H.S.) added another run in the bottom
half of the fifth inning when she scored on an error by the
catcher. The Chargers' Rachel Hamby put the game out of reach
when she tripled down the right field line, scoring two runs
in the top of the sixth. Alabama-Huntsville pitcher Courtney
Funderburk recorded two strikeouts and retired the Pioneer
lineup in the seventh to ice the victory, 12-7. TWU's Amanda
Chambless (Collinsville, TX/Collinsville HS) (0-1)
earned the loss by allowing seven runs on 10 hits in four innings
pitched.
Jennifer
Collins (Euless, TX/Grayson C.C.) got the
Pioneers on the board first against Fort Lewis when she hit
a two-run double in the bottom of the third, making the score
2-0. Two innings later, Amanda Arnold recorded two RBI on her
second double of the day, giving TWU their 4-0 margin of victory.
England (2-0) kept Fort Lewis off the board for the entire
game to earn her second victory in as many days.
Next
up, the Pioneers face No. 25 California State-Bakersfield
at 2:00 p.m. CST to wrap up the Las Vegas Classic.
