PIONEER SOFTBALL SPLITS
FIRST TWO GAMES IN LAS VEGAS
LAS
VEGAS, NVThe Texas Woman's University Pioneer
softball team (1-1) opened the 2003 season with a victory over
Adams State and a loss to Minnesota State-Mankato in
the first day of the Las Vegas Classic. TWU took the first
game by the score of 9-1, thanks to two homeruns by Jami
Ingram (Richmond, BC/Blinn College), then fell to MSU-M
by one run, 0-1.
The team played well in our first game. With this being
such a young squad, you really don't know what to expect from
them this early in the season. Dawn England pitched a great
game against Adams State, allowing just two hits, head
coach Dianne Baker said. In game two, both teams played
well and had a chance to win, but one swing of the bat won
it for Minnesota State. This will be a weekend full of surprises
for TWU.
The
Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against
Adams State after Jami Ingram connected on a two-run
homer in her first at-bat. The score remained the same until
the fourth when TWU scored five runs. Dawn England (Graham,
TX/ Graham H.S.) hit a double to score two, then Nikki
Boudreaux (West, TX/Navarro College) sent England
home with a double of her own. Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi,
TX/Miller H.S.) ended the scoring in the fourth when
she nailed a triple to score Boudreaux, making the score 7-0.
Ingram added
another homer in the fifth inning and Adams State finally got
on the board in the bottom half of the inning after Jamie Grodin
hit a solo homerun. England (1-0) was the winning pitcher and
finished the game with six strikeouts and one run on two hits.
It
was a pitchers dual in TWU's second game against Minnesota
State-Mankato. The Pioneers' Devin Blew (Crowley, TX/Crowley
H.S.) (0-1) held MSU-M scoreless through six innings, giving
up only five hits the entire game and causing them to hit into
numerous groundouts. Jackie Vida broke the tie in the bottom
of the seventh when she hit a solo homerun to win the game
for Minnesota State. Notable performances for TWU were freshman Amanda
Arnold (Lewisville, TX/Lewisville H.S.) going 1-3 with
a double and Nikki Boudreaux finishing 1-2 at the plate. Jennifer
Collins (Euless, TX/Grayson CC) recorded the Pioneers
only other hit of the game.
Next up, the Pioneers play #21 Alabama-Huntsville at 11:00
a.m. CST and Fort Lewis College at 1:00 p.m. CST in back-to-back
games tomorrow. On Saturday, Feb. 8, TWU will face #25 California
State-Bakersfield at 2:00 p.m. CST to wrap up the Las Vegas
Classic.
