PIONEERS PICKED FIFTH
IN LSC PRESEASON SOFTBALL POLL
Sascha Taylor named
preseason Player of the Year in the South Division
DENTON,
TXThe Lone Star Conference announced
its 2003 preseason softball poll and Texas Woman's University
is picked to finish fifth in the South Division standings while
senior outfielder Sascha Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen
F. Austin) was tabbed the division's preseason Player-of-the-Year.
Texas A&M-Kingsville,
last season's Lone Star Conference champion, is expected
to win the 2003 South Division race,
according to votes cast by the league's coaches, sports information
directors and media representatives. The Javelinas, who finished
46-18 last year, were the first-place choice on five of 11
ballots and finished with 56 points. Eastern New Mexico was
selected to finish second with 43 points, followed by Angelo
State (42 points), Tarleton State (38 points), TWU (36 points)
and Abilene Christian (16 points). The Pioneers picked up three
first-place votes and one third-place vote in the selections.
Southeastern Oklahoma State was picked to win the conference's
North Division.
Taylor finished the 2002 season with a league best 53 stolen
bases and hit .444 with 41 runs scored, four doubles, one triple
and 17 RBI. She was named First Team All-LSC North Division,
First Team Division II All-South Central Region and Second
Team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America.
TWU finished the season with a 43-15 record, won the Lone
Star Conference South Division championship and made their
first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II South Central
Regional Championships in 2002.
