PIONEERS PICKED FIFTH IN LSC PRESEASON SOFTBALL POLL
Sascha Taylor named preseason Player of the Year in the South Division

DENTON, TX—The Lone Star Conference announced its 2003 preseason softball poll and Texas Woman's University is picked to finish fifth in the South Division standings while senior outfielder Sascha Taylor (Mansfield, TX/Stephen F. Austin) was tabbed the division's preseason Player-of-the-Year.

Texas A&M-Kingsville, last season's Lone Star Conference champion, is expected to win the 2003 South Division race, according to votes cast by the league's coaches, sports information directors and media representatives. The Javelinas, who finished 46-18 last year, were the first-place choice on five of 11 ballots and finished with 56 points. Eastern New Mexico was selected to finish second with 43 points, followed by Angelo State (42 points), Tarleton State (38 points), TWU (36 points) and Abilene Christian (16 points). The Pioneers picked up three first-place votes and one third-place vote in the selections. Southeastern Oklahoma State was picked to win the conference's North Division.

Taylor finished the 2002 season with a league best 53 stolen bases and hit .444 with 41 runs scored, four doubles, one triple and 17 RBI. She was named First Team All-LSC North Division, First Team Division II All-South Central Region and Second Team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America.

TWU finished the season with a 43-15 record, won the Lone Star Conference South Division championship and made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships in 2002.
