SMITH NAMED FIRST TEAM VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA

DENTON, TX—The 2003 Verizon Academic All-America College Division Women's At-Large teams were announced and Texas Woman's University gymnast Brandi Smith (Smithville, TX/Smithville H.S.) was named to the first team. Smith is the first TWU gymnast in team history to earn First Team Verizon Academic All-America honors. She was named to the third team in 2002.

Smith was one of four Pioneer gymnasts to earn Academic All-District VI First Team honors last week. She was named to the National Dean's List from 1999-2002 and is a member of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Smith was tabbed a USAG Scholar Athlete in 2002 and 2003 while also earning All-American scholar honors from 1999-2002. She was named to TWU's Dean's list every semester of school and was a Gymnastics Association of Texas Merit Award winner in 2002. Smith recorded a season-high of 9.675 on vault vs. Air Force on March 16 and set a new personal best of 9.875 on beam at the Midwest Independent Championships on March 29.
