KUDLAC INKS FIVE NEW GYMNASTS FOR 2004 SQUAD

DENTON, TX—Head gymnastics coach of the 2003 USAG Collegiate National Champions, Frank Kudlac, announced the signing of five new athletes to national letters of intent for the 2003-2004 academic school year. The new athletes are Brenda Campbell (Ravenna, NE/Ravenna HS), Mickey McNeel (Vancouver, WA/ Mountain View H.S.), Brianne Phillips (Spring, TX/Klein H.S.), Catherine Rodriguez (Coppell, TX/Coppell H.S.) and Courtney Travis (San Antonio, TX/ Reagan H.S.).

“All five of these gymnasts are great competitors and come from great high school and club teams. They each will add a lot of depth to our team on every event and help us add an eighth national title to the bookcase,” Kudlac said. “These ladies are not just great gymnasts, but good students as well and I am sure they will make the most of their opportunities at Texas Woman's University.”

Campbell is a 5'2” all-arounder who qualified for the Nebraska Level 10 State Championships for three years. As a freshman, she finished fourth on vault and second on the beam. Campbell bounced back from an injury-plagued sophomore campaign to finish third in the all-around, second on beam and fourth on the vault, bars and floor in 2002. In her senior year, she earned a state championship on beam and finished third in the all-around, vault and floor. Campbell was a member of the Level 10 Nebraska Regional team in 2002 and 2003. She is also a four-year letterwinner on the Ravenna High School track team and has qualified for the state championships in pole vault all four seasons. An outstanding student as well, Campbell is a member of the National Honor Society, Honor Roll and Louplatte All-Academic team. The daughter of Mac and Janet Campbell of Ravenna, she enjoys hanging out with friends and family, outdoor activities and reading in her spare time.

McNeel is a 4'10” all-arounder who lettered for three years in gymnastics at Mountain View High School. She was a Junior Olympic National qualifier in 2000, then won the district all-around championship and placed seventh at the Washington State Championships as a sophomore. In 2002, McNeel won her second all-around district championship, placed third at the state championships and was named Gymnast-of-the-Year by the Columbia newspaper. As a senior, she won her third straight all-around district championship, placed seventh in the all-around and was named Gymnast-of-the-Year for a second consecutive season. McNeel was a Mountain View H.S. scholar athlete from 2000-2002 and earned the Distinguished Scholastic Award as a senior. McNeel is the daughter of Sharry and Robert McNeel of Vancouver, Wa.

Phillips is a 5'3” all-arounder who competed for Bannon's Gymnastix and Texas Star club teams while in high school. She was a three-time state bar champion and qualified for the Level 9 Western Nationals in 2001 and 2002. Phillips finished fourth on the vault at the Level 9 Regional Championships in 2001 and followed that up by becoming the state vault and floor champion and regional vault champion in 2002. This season, she qualified for regionals in Level 10 and finished fifth on vault and sixth on floor. While attending Klein High School, Phillips has been a member of the FFA, Latin Club and named to Who's Who of American High School Students for four years. Phillips is the daughter of Keith and Cynthia Phillips of Spring, Texas.
