THREE PIONEER GYMNASTS
EARN TRIP TO NCAA SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONALS
DENTON,
TX--The
NCAA announced its Women's Gymnastics Regional Championships
selections and three gymnasts from Texas Woman's University
qualified as individuals to the South Central Regional Championship,
to be hosted by the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo.
on Saturday, April 12. Senior Luci Romberg (Foxfield,
CO/ Cherry Creek H.S.) will be making her second straight
appearance in the Regional Championships while senior Stephanie
Loudat (Houston, TX/Cy-Falls H.S.) and freshman Amber
McMeans (Hurst, TX/L.D. Bell HS) will be making their
first trip.
This
is a big honor for our gymnastics program to be represented
at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships.
Besides our three gymnasts being selected, our team finished
with the highest Regional Qualifying Score in our school's
history. We finished in eighth place at the end of the regular
season, where as for most of the season we were ranked at the
bottom. That says a lot about how good this team is and how
much this program has improved over the years, head coach
Frank Kudlac said. I am very proud of Luci, Stephanie
and Amber. I know they will compete well and
do a good job of representing TWU at the Regional Championships.
Romberg
qualified on the vault with a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS)
of 9.830. She is currently ranked No. 1 in the
USAG on that event and 20th in the South Central
Region. Romberg competed in the all-around last year at these
same championships, finishing in 14th place. She
has a season-high of 9.900 on vault set at the Midwest Independent
Championships on March 29, 2003. Loudat earned her
spot on the uneven bars with an RQS of 9.845. She is currently
ranked No. 1 in the USAG and 20th in the South Central
Region. Loudat earned a career-high 9.925 versus the Air Force
on March 16, 2003, which tied the school record set by Erin
MacNabb last season. McMeans will be competing on the
floor exercise in Missouri. She earned her trip to the Regional
Championships by recording an RQS of 9.865, which places her
No. 2 in the USAG and 20th in the region. McMeans
set a new school mark when she recorded a season-high score
of 9.950 on floor versus Air Force on March 16.
As a team, the Pioneers turned in an RQS of 194.410, which
was a little more than a tenth off of what they needed to qualify
as a team to the South Central Regional Championships. TWU
is the No. 1 ranked team in the USAG heading into the national
championships in two weeks.
The
NCAA South Central Regional Championships will be held on
the campus of the University of Missouri on April 12.
The following weekend, TWU will host the USA Gymnastics Collegiate
National Championships from Thursday, April 17 through Saturday,
April 19 in Kitty Magee Arena.
