PIONEER
GYMNASTS HAVE GOOD MEET, BUT COME IN THIRD
SHREVEPORT,
LA--The
Texas Woman's University gymnastics team (6-17) did not have
to count a fall during their tri-meet
with Centenary and LSU, but
still came up short with a 194.575. LSU took the event with
a 197.225, followed by Centenary in second with a season-high
194.600. Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek HS) placed
the highest of any Pioneer gymnast on the night when she came
in second in the all-around with a cumulative score of 38.950.
The team competed very well tonight and posted our second
highest score of the season. Sure the two losses hurt, but
we get to drop a 190 that we recorded earlier in the season
and replace it with tonight's score. That will improve our
Regional Qualifying Average and get us a little closer to qualifying
for the NCAA South Central Regional Championships, head
coach Frank Kudlac said. I am very pleased because all
of the girls did their job tonight. Next week, we will be coming
right back to this same gym to compete in our team's first-ever
conference championship, and that will help us tremendously.
TWU
began the meet on beam and scored a 48.000, third behind
LSU's 48.825 and Centenary's 48.300. The Tiger's April Burkholder
won the event with a 9.975 while Kaela Meinart of Centenary
came in second with a 9.875. Amber McMeans (Hurst, TX/L.D.
Bell H.S.) led the Pioneers with a seventh place finish
on beam and a score of 9.750. TWU went to floor during the
second rotation and equaled their season-high score of 49.200,
but still came in third behind LSU's 49.600 and Centenary's
49.475. Burkholder took her second individual title on the
night by scoring a perfect 10.000. Sarah Racioppi of Centenary
was second with a 9.950 while Jade Jenkins of LSU came in third
with a 9.925. Jonica Scott (Grand Prairie, TX/Bowie H.S.) tied
a career-high with a 9.900, which was good enough for sixth
place on floor.
TWU made their way around to vault in the third rotation and
hit all six of their vaults for a 48.625, which placed them
second behind LSU with a 49.400. Burkholder again took the
top honors with her vault of 9.950, followed by her teammates,
Rikki L'Heureux and Jade Jenkins, in second and third. Luci
Romberg tied for sixth place with a 9.825 to lead the Pioneers.
In the fourth and final rotation, it was the Tigers winning
the bars with a 49.400, followed by Centenary in second with
a 48.800 and TWU close behind with a 48.750. Burkholder completed
the sweep as she won the bars title with a 9.950. LSU's Annie
Gagnon came in second with a 9.900 while her teammate, Rikki
L'Heureux, was third with a 9.850. Stephanie Loudat (Houston,
TX/Cy-Falls H.S.) scored a 9.800 to finish in a tie for
sixth place.
Burkholder finished out her night by winning the all-around
title as well with a 39.875. Romberg came in second with a
38.950, followed Kaela Meinart of Centenary in third with a
38.850.
Up
next, the Pioneers hit the road for their final meet of the
2003 regular season when they travel back to Centenary to
participate in the Midwest Independent Championships on Saturday,
March 29 beginning at 2 p.m. This will be the first conference
championship
in school history for the TWU gymnastics team.
