PIONEERS
BEAT AIR FORCE IN GYMNASTICS WITH
RECORD-SETTING DAY
DENTON, TX--The
Texas Woman's University gymnastics team (6-15) used new
school records of 49.075 on vault and
49.250 on bars to propel them to a new school team record of
196.000 in a dual meet victory over the Air Force Academy.
The Falcons came in second with a school record of their own,
194.975. The Pioneers' team score is six-tenths of a point
higher than the mark they set last season against Kentucky
on March 15, 2002, which was a 195.400.
When you set the school team record, that means everyone
contributed in a big way and that was certainly the case this
afternoon. We built some momentum on vault by breaking the
school record, then every other event just got better as the
meet went on. Bars were great and we had to count a fall on
beam, but rebounded on floor. The girls didn't let down all
day and that proved to be the deciding factor, head coach
Frank Kudlac said. Qualifying for the NCAA South Central
Regional Championships is still in our grasp because we still
have two meets left to improve our Regional Qualifying Score.
The girls are getting some much needed rest this next week,
but we will be ready to go against Centenary and LSU next Friday
night.
The
Pioneers opened up the meet by recording a school record
49.075 on vault, winning the event and taking an early lead
against Air Force, who turned in a 48.525. Lindsey Clowers
(Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) debuted a new vault
and recorded a school record 9.925 to win the event. TWU controlled
the podium on vault as Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry
Creek H.S.) finished second with a 9.875 while Jessica
Brozovich (Broomfield, CO/Erie H.S.) turned in a career
best 9.850 to finish in third. TWU extended their lead by almost
two points after two rotations as they won the bars with another
school record, 49.250 to the Falcons' 48.275. The Pioneers' Stephanie
Loudat (Houston, TX/Cy-Falls H.S.) and Air Force's Laura
Frank tied for the top spot on bars with a 9.925. With that
score, Loudat tied the school record set by Erin MacNabb
(Glenwood, MD/Notre Dame Prep.) in 2002. Chelsie Leggett
(Centerville, OH/Centerville H.S.) came in third with
a personal best 9.875.
Air Force won the beam title with a 48.925 to TWU's 48.500,
but Amber McMeans (Hurst, TX/L.D. Bell H.S.) won the
third individual title for the Pioneers as she turned in a
career-best 9.875. Laura Frank and Jessa Liegl also scored
a 9.875 to tie McMeans for the top spot. The Falcons won their
second event on the day when they took the floor exercise with
a 49.250. TWU came in a close second with a 49.175. McMeans
won her second individual title of the day by tying with Allison
Todd of Air Force with a 9.950. McMeans' score tied a school
record set by Cari Casazza in 1999. Lindsey Clowers and Jonica
Scott (Grand Prairie, TX/Bowie H.S.) tied for third on
floor with a 9.900.
In
the all-around competition, the Falcons' Laura Frank took
top honors with a 39.400 while TWU's Romberg came in second
with a 39.050. Jessa Liegl came in third with a 38.750. Other
notable performances for the Pioneers were Bethany Rehm
(St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell H.S.) tying for fifth
spot on the bars with teammate MacNabb with a personal
best 9.850 in her first collegiate meet. Romberg and
Scott set new career records on the day, with Romberg's 9.875
coming on vault and Scott's 9.900 coming on floor.
Up
next, the Pioneers hit the road for a tri-meet in Shreveport,
La., against Centenary and LSU
on Friday, March 21. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7
p.m.
