DENTON,
TX--The
Texas Woman's University gymnastics team (5-15) rebounded
from a poor performance last weekend
in Oklahoma to record a season-high 194.700, en route to dual
meet victory over its chief rival, the Air Force Academy.
The Falcons turned in a season-high 194.500 in the loss. The
Pioneers recorded the highest team score in the USAG this season
with their 194.700 Friday night. Luci Romberg (Foxfield,
CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) won the vault with a new school
record 9.850, then finished second in the all-around with a
new career-high 39.250.
The
Pioneers won the vault, 48.700 to 48.475, in the first rotation
and never looked back the rest of the night. Romberg
won the event with her personal best, 9.850, while Laura Frank
of the Air Force came in second with a 9.800 and Jessica
Brozovich (Broomfield, CO/Erie HS) in third with a
9.775. The Falcons edged TWU on the uneven bars, 48.600 to
48.450, and were led by Allison Todd who won the event with
a 9.875. The Pioneers' Stephanie Loudat (Houston, TX/Cy-Falls
H.S.) and Air Force's Jessa Liegl tied for second spot
with a 9.850. Balance beam was the closest competition on the
night, but TWU won the advantage by 25 hundredths of a point,
48.500 to 48.475. Todd recorded her second event win on the
night with a 9.900 on beam. Four Pioneers tied for second place
with Kristin Frogge (Houston, TX/Cy-Fair H.S.), Loudat,
Romberg and Amber McMeans (Hurst, TX/L.D. Bell HS) all
recording a 9.825.
The
Falcons' Allison Todd tried to lead her team to a win on
floor as she won her third individual title with a meet-high
9.925 on floor, but TWU recorded a 49.050 to Air Force's 48.950
to take the event and the meet win. McMeans came in second
with a season-high 9.900, followed by her teammate Jonica
Scott (Grand Prairie, TX/ Bowie H.S.) in third with a
career-high 9.875. Todd took the all-around title with a total
score of 39.350, followed by Romberg in second with her career-high
39.250. McMeans came in fourth in her first meet as an all-arounder
with a season-high 39.125. Five different Pioneers recorded
new career-highs on the night, led by McMeans who registered
new scores on all four events and the all-around.
Up
next, the Pioneers host the Air Force Academy for a second
straight time in their final home meet of the 2003 season.
The dual meet is scheduled for Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m.
