PIONEER GYMNASTICS STRUGGLES AT OKLAHOMA

NORMAN, OK--The Texas Woman's University gymnastics team (4-15) turned in one of its worst performances of the season in the University of Oklahoma tri-meet as the Pioneers struggled on vault, bars and beam to come in last place with a team score of 189.650. No. 15 Oklahoma won the meet with a 197.525 while Centenary came in second with a 189.850. Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) recorded the highest finish of any Pioneer gymnast as she came in third in the all-around with a 37.425.

Oklahoma won every event on the night and did it by scoring greater than a 49.250 on all four stations. TWU began the meet by recording a season-low 47.500 on vault, which placed them second behind the Sooners with a 49.250. Jessica Brozovich (Broomfield, CO/Erie H.S.) finished in a tie for sixth place with a 9.700, but Patricia Aoki scored a 9.950 to win vault. The Pioneers had to count two falls on bars, scoring a 46.775 and came in third behind OU's 49.300 and Centenary's 46.875. Allison Landis of Oklahoma recorded a perfect 10.0 on her bars routine to take the top spot. Luci Romberg was the highest up on the podium for the Pioneers as she tied for seventh place with a 9.650. It was much of the same for TWU on balance beam as they had to count three falls and limped home with a score of 46.275. The Sooners won the beam title with a 49.300 and was led by Landis, who won her second event of the night with a 9.925. Brandi Smith (Smithville, TX/Smithville H.S.) did a good job for TWU on the beam, scoring a 9.700 and finishing in a tie for seventh place.

The one event TWU shined on was floor exercise. The Pioneers recorded a 49.100, second behind Oklahoma's 49.675. Amber McMeans (Hurst, TX/L.D. Bell H.S.) led TWU with a fifth place finish and a score of 9.875, tying a season-high. The Sooners' Patricia Aoki turned in the second perfect score of the night as she recorded a 10.0 on her floor routine to take her second individual title of the night. Aoki also won the all-around competition with a combined score of 39.650, followed by Centenary's Kaela Meinert in second with a 37.975. Lindsey Clowers (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) competed in the all-around for a second time this season and finished in fourth place, behind her teammate Luci Romberg, with a score of 36.525.

Up next, the Pioneers return home to host the Air Force Academy in the final two home meets of the 2003 season. The first dual meet is scheduled for Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m. with a second meet to follow on Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m.
