PIONEER GYMNASTICS FINISHES THIRD IN CORVETTE CUP

COLUMBIA, MO.—The Texas Woman's University gymnastics team (4-13) recorded a new season-high team score of 193.425, which placed them third in the Corvette Cup hosted by the University of Missouri. Missouri won the meet with a 195.925, followed by Eastern Michigan University in second place with a team score of 194.600. Southeast Missouri State University came in last place with a 191.900. Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek H.S.) led the Pioneers with a third place finish on bars (9.825) and fourth in the all-around with a 38.550.

“We competed well today and it showed with a season-high 193.425. We didn't have to count a single fall during the meet. We started on floor, which has been a problem for us lately and pulled out a good score of 48.800, then finished up strong on the beam,” head coach Frank Kudlac said. “Luci did a nice job for us in the all-around and gave us some good scores on every event. Amber McMeans stepped up on beam and performed a great routine right after Lindsey Clowers fell in her attempt. We still have some things to work on, but we looked good on every event and I was very happy with the results.”

The Pioneers started off on floor and turned in a 48.800, which placed them third on the event behind Missouri (49.325) and Eastern Michigan (48.900). Missouri's Alisha Robinson and Lauren Schwartzman tied EMU's Leah Hashimoto for the top spot on floor exercise with a 9.900. Lindsey Clowers (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) and Jonica Scott (Grand Prairie, TX/Bowie H.S.) finished the highest of any Pioneers when they both scored a 9.825 to tie for seventh place. Eastern Michigan took the top spot on vault with a 49.350 and Hashimoto won her second event of the meet with a score of 9.925. Luci Romberg came in ninth on vault with a 9.800 while Kim Holland (McKinney, TX/Allen H.S.) finished in 14th place with a season-high 9.725. TWU recorded a 48.350 on vault to finish last on the event.

The Pioneers turned in a season-high 48.475 on bars in the third rotation, but Missouri took the top spot away with a 49.100. A pair of Tigers, Jodie Heinicka and Andrea Nervig, won the bars title with a 9.850 while Romberg came in third with a 9.825. The next highest finisher for TWU was Jennifer Bolli (Rockwall, TX/Rockwall H.S.) in eighth place with a 9.700

TWU moved to beam on the final rotation and scored a meet low 47.800 while meet host Missouri won its third event of the evening with a score of 48.300. The Tigers' Alina Hamm won the event with a 9.850. Amber McMeans (Hurst, TX/L.D. Bell HS) finished in a tie for sixth place with a season-high 9.700 to lead the Pioneers. Alisha Robinson of Missouri won the all-around with a 39.400 while Natalie Hashimoto came in second with a 39.300.

Up next, the Pioneers travel to Norman, Okla. to face the University of Oklahoma and Centenary in a tri-meet on Friday, March 7. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
