PIONEER
GYMNASTICS STRUGGLES IN MARYLAND
COLLEGE
PARK, MDThe Texas Woman's University
gymnastics team (3-11) had a good meet going through two events
until they fell apart on floor exercise with a 45.625 in the
third rotation. They finished with a team score of 190.225,
which placed them last in the quad meet behind Maryland (195.825),
Towson (195.400) and James Madison
(190.600). Jessica Brozovich (Broomfield,
CO/Erie H.S.) recorded the highest finish of any Pioneer
gymnast on the night when recorded a season-high 9.800 on vault,
placing her third on the event.
The
team competed well on bars, beam and vault, but our troubles
on floor exercise cost us a chance at scoring
at least a 193.00 or better. It is a shame that we couldn't
put it all together on all four events tonight, head
coach Frank Kudlac said. The
way we competed tonight is unacceptable.
The
Pioneers began the quad meet on bars and recorded a 47.950,
which placed third behind Maryland with a 49.275 and Towson
with a 49.175. Jenn Baierlein of Towson Univ. won the bars
title with a 9.950, followed by two gymnasts from Maryland
in second and third. The Pioneers' Stephanie Loudat (Houston,
TX/Cy-Falls H.S.) tied for sixth with a 9.825. TWU scored
a 47.975 on beam to place fourth behind Towson (48.800), Maryland
(48.750) and James Madison (48.300). Maryland's Sarah Hoenig
won the individual beam title with a 9.875. Brandi Smith
(Smithville, TX/ Smithville H.S.) came in eighth place
when she recorded a new career-high 9.750 on the event.
The
wheels came off in the third rotation when TWU had to count
four falls on floor, giving them a score of 45.625. Maryland
won their second event on the night when they recorded a 48.975
on floor, but Towson's Kristen Presutti took the top individual
honor with a 9.925. Luci Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry
Creek H.S.) paced the Pioneers with an 11th place
finish on floor on a score of 9.650. TWU rebounded on their
final event of the evening, scoring a 48.675 on vault and finishing
second behind Maryland with a 48.825. Towson's Presutti won
her second event of the night when she took vault with a 9.925.
Rachel Martinez of Maryland won the all-around competition
with a total score of 39.525 while Romberg came in fourth with
a 38.625.
Up
next, the Pioneers continue their road trip as they travel
to Columbia, Mo., to participate in the Corvette Cup,
hosted by Missouri. TWU will face Mizzou,
Eastern Michigan and Southeast Missouri State at 2 p.m.
on Sunday, March 2.
