STRUGGLES
ON FLOOR EXERCISE CAUSE PIONEERS TO FALL
TO THIRD IN QUAD
MEET
DENTON,
TXThe Texas Woman's University gymnastics
team (1-6) was trailing Southern Utah by only two
points heading into the final rotation, but the Pioneers self-destructed,
scoring a season-low 45.700 on floor, to finish third in their
quad meet. Southern Utah won the event with a team score of
193.025 followed by Centenary College with a 190.250 and TWU
with a 190.100. Hamline (Minn.) University finished fourth
with a season-high score of 175.975. Luci Romberg (Foxfield,
CO/ Cherry Creek H.S.) shined for the Pioneers on the
night, winning the vault title with a new career-high 9.800
and the bars title with a season-high 9.875.
We had a great meet going after three events, but fell
apart on floor and cost us a chance at winning. The team did
very well on vault, bars and beam, improving their scores on
all three events from our previous three meets, head
coach Frank Kudlac said. We won three individual titles
with Luci Romberg winning vault and bars while Amber McMeans
took the beam title. The team has some work to do this week
as we prepare for a tough road meet against Kentucky, Arkansas
and Illinois-Chicago.
Southern Utah took an early advantage by winning the vault
title with a 48.500, followed by the Pioneers in second place
with a 48.350. The Thunderbirds Molly Bauer placed second behind
Romberg on the event with a 9.775, while Janelle Thibault of
Centenary came in third with a 9.750. Southern Utah won their
second event of the night by taking the bars with a 48.900,
followed by Centenary with a 48.625 and the Pioneers in third
with a 48.150. SUU's Talayna Fortunato and Centenary's Thibault
tied for second with a 9.825 behind Romberg's 9.875.
TWU
took the top honors on beam, wining with a score of 47.900.
SUU was second with a 46.675 followed by Centenary in third
with a 45.425. TWU freshman Amber McMeans (Hurst, TX/L.D.
Bell H.S.) won her first individual title in collegiate
gymnastics by scoring a season-best 9.675 to win the balance
beam. Fellow teammate Rachel Goddard (Scarborough, ONT/Dunbarton
H.S.) came in second with a new personal-best of 9.650.
Southern Utah took the final event, floor exercise, with a
meet-best 48.950, followed by Centenary in second place with
a 48.250. TWU finished fourth on that event with a 45.700.
The Thunderbirds Sandi Lyman won the floor title by recording
a 9.925. Two of her teammates, Jayme Morgan and Sheena Shaw,
tied for second with the Pioneers' Lindsey Clowers (Garland,
TX/South Garland H.S.) with a 9.825.
Romberg
and Kaela Meinart tied for top honors in the all-around with
a 38.325, which is a new season-high for Romberg. Other notable
performances for TWU were Lindsey Clowers recording a new
career-high
of 9.700
on vault and Stephanie Loudat (Houston, TX/Cy-Falls H.S.) turning
in a season-high of 9.800 on bars.
Up
next, the Pioneers travel to Lexington, Kentucky, to participate
in a quad meet against Kentucky, Arkansas and Illinois-Chicago
on Friday, February 7. The meet is scheduled to begin at
