#1 PIONEER GYMNASTICS
STRUGGLES IN ROCKY MOUNTAIN OPEN
COLORADO
SPRINGS, COThe Texas Woman's University
gymnastics team (0-4) dug themselves a hole after two events
when they had to count five totals falls on uneven bars and
balance beam en route to finishing third at the Rocky Mountain
Open with a 189.150. California-Davis won
the meet with a 191.625, followed by two-time defending USAG
national champion Air Force with a 190.125.
We had to count three falls on bars and two on beam
and you can't do that and expect to win against good talent
like UC-Davis and Air Force. The girls rebounded on floor and
vault, but we couldn't make up the point difference from our
earlier problems, head coach Frank Kudlac said. Kristin
Frogge saw action for the first time this season and did a
good job for us on beam and vault. We wanted to make a statement
tonight and the team just did not show up.
UC-Davis and TWU tied for the vault team title with a 48.075.
UC-Davis' Tiffany Chan and the Pioneers' Jessica Brozovich
(Broomfield, CO/Erie H.S.) tied for first place on that
event with a 9.775. UC-Davis took both the bars and beam titles,
scoring 47.750 and 47.575 respectively. Becky Lewis of the
Air Force Academy won the bars with a 9.675 while her teammate
Allison Todd won the beam with a score of 9.825. TWU scored
a 46.200 on bars and a 46.475 on beam. The Pioneers were one-tenth
of a point from taking the floor title with a 48.400. Air Force
won the event with a 48.500 and took the top two individual
spots with Todd scoring a meet-high 9.925 in first and Laura
Frank with a 9.800 in second.
Notable
performances for TWU were Luci
Romberg (Foxfield, CO/Cherry Creek HS) finishing
fourth in the all-around with a 37.475 and fourth on bars
with a 9.600. Rachel
Goddard (Scarborough, ONT/Dunbarton H.S.) recorded
a fifth place finish on beam with a season-high 9.550 while Lindsey
Clowers (Garland, TX/South Garland H.S.) tied for the
fifth spot on vault with a 9.650. Kim Holland (McKinney,
TX/Allen H.S.) paced the team on floor exercise with
a 9.775, which placed her fifth in the standings.
Up
next, the Pioneers return home to host a quad-meet with Southern
Utah, Centenary and Hamline on
Friday, Jan. 31. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
It will be High School Gymnastics Appreciation night at Kitty
Magee Arena with any member of a high school gymnastics team
receiving admission for 10 cents.
