TEXAS WOMAN'S UNIVERSITY TO CO-HOST 2003 USA GYMNASTICS COLLEGIATE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

DENTON, TX—For the third time since the Pioneer gymnastics team began competing in the championships sponsored by USA Gymnastics, formerly the United States Gymnastics Federation, in 1987, Texas Woman's University will co-host the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships on April 17-19, 2003, with the Greater Denton Sports Commission. TWU hosted the event in 1994 and 1995 at the Super Pit on the University of North Texas campus, walking away with the national team title in both years.

For three days in April, Pioneer Hall on the TWU campus will be the center of the gymnastics world as 16 men's and women's varsity teams, individual qualifiers and men's club teams from around the country will compete on 10 different events to see who will be crowned national champions in 2003. In 1987, the NCAA made the men's and women's gymnastics national championships an open championship in which any school in Division I, II and III could qualify. Consequently, the USAG created a men's and women's collegiate and club national championship event for Division I, II and III schools that award six scholarships or less.

The USAG has crowned six different men's champions and seven different women's champions since 1987 with the College of William & Mary men's teams holding the most titles with five while Texas Woman's University has the most women's titles with six. William & Mary took the men's title while the Air Force Academy won the women's title in 2002 at Springfield College in Massachusetts.

Ticket information will be available for pre-sale starting in January through the Greater Denton Sports Commission and at all TWU Gymnastics regular season events. Event passes will be $20 for adults and $15 for students (ages 7-17) while a day pass will run $8 for adults and $6 for students. Children six and under are admitted free. The women's semifinal team competition will begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 17 with the finals starting at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18. Men's team finals will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday while the individual event finals for men and women will start at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19.
