Devin
Gabbard begins his fifth season leading the Texas Woman’s
University basketball team and the Pioneers are reaching
for new heights in 2004-05.
Gabbard
returns just one starter and three letterwinners from the
squad. With no seniors,
Gabbard looks to many new faces to lead the way for TWU
this season.
Last
season, TWU was 3-24 overall and fifth in the Lone Star Conference
South Divison with a 2-12 mark.
Gabbard
has an overall record of 26-80 in his four
seasons at TWU.
In
2002, Gabbard brought the Pioneers out of the cellar of the
LSC South, a place TWU had been for three straight seasons,
and led the team to a fifth
place finish
with a 6-8 record, 10-16 overall. He struggled in his first season as the
Pioneers
went 2-24 overall, 1-13 in conference action.
Gabbard has coached four All-Conference South Division selections (Jennifer
Hall, 2001, Meaghan Lewis, 2002, Jessica Springer, 2003 and Julie Prescher,
2004) one
Academic All-Conference selection (Meaghan Lewis, 2003), and has had 12
players named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
A
native of Houston, Texas, Gabbard competed in soccer, basketball
and baseball at Northland
Christian High School. After graduation, Gabbard
enrolled at
Texas Woman’s University and studied kinesiology. He was a student
assistant coach for the basketball team from 1994 until his graduation
in 1996. He then
aided the Athletics Director as a graduate assistant from 1996-98 in
event management, still finding some time to help coach the basketball
team.
Gabbard earned his
Master’s Degree from Texas Woman’s University in 2000.
Gabbard
joined the staff at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in 1998 as
an assistant coach to Jill Willson. TAMU-K finished third in the Lone
Star
Conference that season with a 17-10 record.
Gabbard
made his second return to Denton when he was hired as the
new basketball coach on June
1, 2000. He is considered by many as a great
young talent
in coaching. Gabbard is respected around the state for his recruiting
abilities and is a student
of the game. He is a great motivator and leader who has brought a
winning philosophy to the Pioneers’ program.
Gabbard
is married to the former Alisha McCrummen of Mesquite, Texas.
Alisha Gabbard is a former
Pioneer basketball student-athlete who played
from
1995-98. They
reside in Denton with their daughter, Tristan.
