BASKETBALL LOSES TO NO. 15 ANGELO STATE
Lyons Leads Pioneer Offense with 12 Points
DENTON,
Texas – The Pioneers held the lead twice
in the opening 8:14 of play, but could not overcome No.
15 Angelo State’s defense as the Belles scored 14
unanswered points to end the first half.
Senior Daphne
Lyons (Flower Mound, TX) scored half of her team-high
12 points in the first half, when TWU did hold a 21-19
edge on the boards.
“It
was a big thing for us to control the boards,” said
TWU head coach Devin Gabbard. “Then
we just ran into a buzz saw. They have four players who are
capable of scoring more than 20 points a night and when one
struggled someone else stepped up. It was just tough for
us to get back in a groove.”
Angelo
State junior Sharon Ballenger led all scorers with 19 points,
and teammate Natalja Tsurbakova added 15.
This
game concluded the Pioneers 2003-04 home season. TWU (2-23,
1-11 LSC) will be on the road next Thursday and Saturday
to play Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas A&M-Kingsville,
respectively.
