TEXAS
WOMAN'S BASKETBALL LOSES TO ABILENE CHRISTIAN
A Pair of TWU Threes Spark Second-Half Rally
DENTON,
Texas – The
Pioneers made a 10-3 run in the second half, but could
not overcome their halftime deficit and lost to Abilene
Christian, 58-42. Senior Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins,
TX) and junior Lauri Engleman (Jewett,
TX) each drained three-pointers in that run
to pull to within 10 points, 41-31, with 8:42 remaining.
Pemberton
scored 10 of her game-high 12 points in the second half.
Engleman grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds on the night.
Junior Emily Hartman (Mesquite, TX) came
off the bench for TWU to contribute nine points.
“Lauri
did a great job on boards,” said TWU head coach Devin
Gabbard. “She gave a lot of effort tonight
and sparked the others when we needed to get back on track.”
The
Pioneers drop to 2-22 on the season and Abilene Christian
improved to 17-7 and is tied for first place in the Lone
Star Conference South Division.
“We
played hard and with heart,” added Gabbard. “This
was the number one team in the conference with a lot experience.
We were not going to go away.”
The
Pioneers will play their final home game of the season this
Saturday, February 21, hosting Angelo State at 7:30 p.m.
It will be Senior Recognition Night for TWU’s three
seniors: Daphne Lyons, Julie Prescher and
Pemberton.
