TWU BASKETBALL LOSES TO EASTERN NEW MEXICO
Pioneers Return Home For Final Home Games

PORTALES, N.M. – The Texas Woman’s University basketball team was down by only five points (23-18) at the half, but suffered a 51-38 loss on the road at Eastern New Mexico Saturday afternoon.

Senior Daphne Lyons (Flower Mound, TX) led the Pioneer offense with 13 points. Junior Lauri Engleman (Jewett, TX) added 10, all in the first half, and tied a career-high with seven rebounds in the game.

The Zias came out for the second half on a tear with a 20-4 run over the half’s first 12 minutes. TWU senior Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX) then scored four quick points and the Pioneers tallied another six unanswered points over the next 2:44 of play to cut the deficit to 15 points. TWU could not get any closer than 13 points when Lyons hit the game’s final shot with :15 on the clock.

“I’m pleased because this may have been the best effort we’ve shown in a long time,” said TWU head coach Devin Gabbard. “Our execution just fell apart on two big stretches, at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, but not our effort. Our effort was good the entire game.”

The Pioneers (2-20, 1-8 LSC) return home for their final two regular season home games on February 19 and 21. TWU will recognize its three seniors, Lyons, Pemberton and Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX), during the February 21 Senior Night game with Angelo State. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m. at Kitty Magee Arena.
