LOSING SKID HALTED WITH VICTORY OVER COMMERCE
Four Pioneers Score in Double Figures for First Conference Win

DENTON, Texas – The Pioneers earned their first Lone Star Conference victory of the season with an 81-80 defeat of visiting Texas A&M-Commerce, snapping a 12-game TWU losing streak.

TWU went on an 11-2 run to start the first half, with six of those points from senior forward Daphne Lyons (Flower Mound, TX). TWU then took a 13-point lead (40-27) with 4:09 left in the first half and held a 45-38 advantage at the break on the strength of a season-best performance from the field. The team shot 53.6 percent (15-28) from the floor in the first half and finished the game shooting 26-49 field goals, including eight three-pointers.

The Lions battled back in the second half, making an 11-3 run of their own and taking their first lead of the game at the 4:41 mark. The Pioneers tied it up at 76-all on a free throw from Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX), but fell behind until Prescher drained her signature three-pointer to put the score at the final 81-80.

Prescher scored 12 points in the game, as did junior forward Kenyada Frazier (Denver, CO). Lyons led the team in scoring with 18 on the afternoon, and senior forward Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX) added 13 points. Junior forward Emily Hartman (Mesquite, TX) contributed eight points in just 13 minutes of playing time.

“Our post players did a tremendous job today,” said TWU head coach Devin Gabbard. “When our team’s leading scorer (Prescher) got into foul trouble, they came in off the bench and scored. I’ve been telling this group that they are a talented team. Now that we have this first conference win, they are already walking around with a different look on their faces. We hope to see that look in our next practice.”

The Pioneers (2-17, 1-5 LSC) continue on their five-game homestand at Kitty Magee Arena. They host West Texas A&M this Thursday, Febraury 5 at 7 p.m. and Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, February 7 for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
