TWU LOSES TO UNDEFEATED ANGELO STATE
Pioneers Play Tough First Half on the Road

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Senior guard Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX) scored nine of her team-high 12 points in the first half as TWU went into the intermission down by just two (27-25). However, No. 11 Angelo State managed to keep its record unblemished at 15-0 this season and earned a 67-42 victory on its home court.

Besides the score, both teams went into the second half pretty even. Each grabbed 18 rebounds apiece in the first half and ASU only had two more field goals. The Pioneers held a considerable edge from three-point range as Prescher nailed three treys, senior Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX) added two and junior Lauri Engleman (Jewett, TX) hit one in her return to the TWU line-up.

The Belles were led by 6-3 junior Natalja Tsurbakova, who scored 27 points with 11-15 shooting from the field.

“It was a two half game,” said TWU head coach Devin Gabbard. “I was pleased with our first half. We shot well and played great defensively. We just got winded in the second half and Tsurbakova got on a run that motivated the rest of her team. That team (ASU) is very deserving of its national ranking (No. 11) and should legitimately be in the Top 5.”

The Pioneers (1-14, 0-2) remain on the road for a 3 p.m. tip at Abilene Christian on Saturday. TWU returns home on Tuesday, January 27 to face Midwestern State at 7 p.m. in the first of a five-game homestand at Kitty Magee Arena.
