TWU
BASKETBALL TEAM NOTCHES FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
Pioneers Defeat Texas College, 98-53
DENTON,
Texas – Junior
forward Emily Hartman (Mesquite, TX/Texas A&M-Corpus
Christi) was one board shy of a double-double
recording 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the Texas
Woman’s University basketball team to its first
win of the season with a 98-53 victory over Texas College.
In
addition to Hartman’s career-high performance, freshman Megan
McCrummen (Mesquite, TX/North Mesquite HS) tallied
a career-best 11 assists as the Pioneers shot 49.4 percent
(40-81) from the field. For the first time this season, a
total of five TWU players scored in double figures. Seniors Daphne
Lyons (Flower Mound, TX/Louisiana-Monroe) and Julie
Prescher (Valley View, TX/Valley View HS) tossed
in 17 and 16 points, respectively. Senior Lacey Pemberton
(Hawkins, TX/Paris JC) added 15 points and junior Ashley
Browning (Plano, TX/TCU) chipped in 10 points.
"I’m
very excited about the win. We had a couple of big goals
tonight," head coach Devin Gabbard said. "Of
course, we wanted the win, but the big thing was that we
wanted to limit the turnovers. Our goal was 12, but knowing
we were going to be the more aggressive team we knew it may
be more (20). Our other goal was to outrebound them. We took
care of the ball a little better than we had and won the
battle on the boards (49-25). This week of practice made
the biggest difference. We knew if we could get back and
fix the tings that we needed to fix, then it would change
the whole outlook of the season. Our players had a great
game and looked like what we see in practice every day."
The
Pioneers (1-5) will travel to Midwestern State on Tuesday,
December 16 for their next game. The next home game is Saturday,
January 3 versus Northeastern State. Tip-off is 3 p.m. at
Kitty Magee Arena.
