PIONEERS LET ANOTHER GAME SLIP AWAY

DENTON, TX—Central Oklahoma (2-0) hit only 19 of their 70 shots, but received 30 trips to free throw line from 29 Texas Woman’s University (0-2) fouls and squeaked out a 49-55 victory. The Bronchos hit 16 of their free throws, which proved to be the difference. The Pioneers defense played well, holding UCO to just 27% from the field, but the offense turned the ball over 28 times which translated to 24 Broncho points.

"Today’s game was very sloppy because both teams were tired from yesterday and it was hard for either one of us to get into the flow. Both our defense and offense played great today, we just couldn’t get a break from the officials," head coach Devin Gabbard said. "When you turn the ball over and allow UCO to shoot 30 free throws to our seven, it makes for a long day."

Baskets were hard to come by for both teams as the Pioneers and UCO missed a total of 10 shots in the game’s first five minutes. The Bronchos took a 6-10 advantage, after Jackee Brown scored four straight points, at the 14:20 mark and held onto the lead for most of the first half. Emily Hartman (Mesquite, Tex./Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) knotted the game at 18 apiece when she hit a short jumper, then Laurie Engleman (Jewett, Tex./Leon H.S.) made both of her free throws to give TWU their first lead of the game with 3:29 left until half. Megan McCrummen (Mesquite, Tex./North Mesquite H.S.) and Engleman both added field goals to end the first half, with the Pioneers leading 24-23. UCO struggled from the floor, hitting only nine of 40 shots for 22.5% while TWU connected on 47% of their shots.

The Pioneers opened the second half with a four-minute, 12-3 run, thanks to two threes from Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX) and moved out to their biggest lead of the game, 36-27. After Engleman added a free throw, making the score 37-27 with 15:14 on the clock, TWU was called for four straight fouls which allowed UCO to convert on five free throws. The Bronchos added in a couple of field goals and drew within one, 37-36. The Pioneers clung to a two-point lead during the next 13 minutes, but Lindsay Young hit a jumper and Brown nailed a three at the 2:21 mark to give UCO a 47-50 lead. The Bronchos added three more free throws and a field goal to ice the game, 49-55.

TWU hit 22 of 48 shots for 45% from the field, but only had seven trips to the stripe off of 15 fouls from UCO, making three. Daphne Lyons (Flower Mound, TX) led the team in scoring for the second straight game, finishing with 12 points. Prescher chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds while Kenyada Frazier (Denver, CO) led the team with 10 boards. McCrummen finished with a game-high eight assists. The Bronchos had three players in double figures with Laura Hamilton leading the way with a game-high 14 points. The Pioneers out-rebounded UCO 47-40, but committed twice as many turnovers.

Up next, the Pioneers hit the road for three games in a row as they travel to Stephenville, Tex. on Tuesday, Nov. 25 to play Tarleton State University at 7:00 p.m. The day after Thanksgiving, TWU will participate in the Missouri Western Thanksgiving Classic in St. Joseph, Missouri. They will face St. Mary’s on Friday, Nov. 28 at 1:00 p.m., then play Lincoln University on Saturday, Nov. 29, also at 1:00 p.m.
