BASKETBALL
INKS THREE NEW PLAYERS FOR 2003-04 SEASON
DENTON,
TXTexas
Woman's University head basketball coach Devin
Gabbard announced the signing of three new
athletes to national letters of intent for the 2003-2004
academic school year. The new players are Kenyada
Frazier (Denver, CO), Ashley Browning (Plano, TX) and Emily
Hartman (Mesquite, TX).
Kenyada
is a 6-1 forward who is athletic enough to play any position
on the floor. She can play outside or inside and will give
our team a tremendous advantage because of her versatility.
Ashley Browning is a 6-1 guard who will present a lot of
match up problems for our opponents next season. She can
score from anywhere on the court and her size will help our
defense out on the perimeter, Gabbard said. Emily
is a post player that we tried to recruit out of high school
and we are very glad to have her back at TWU. We needed a
big post player that could score on the low block and give
us some defensive presence and Emily will fill that role
nicely.
Frazier
is a 6'1 post who makes her way to TWU after playing
for two seasons at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. She
appeared in 15 games during her sophomore
campaign, with one start, and averaged 3.9 points and 2.6
rebounds per game. Frazier led the team in scoring twice,
with a 15-point performance at Southeastern Louisiana and
a 10-point showing against Stephen F. Austin. She pulled
down a career-high seven rebounds in a two-point win over
Texas Southern and finished the 2001-02 season with a team-best
.545 field goal percentage. Frazier played in 27 games
as a true freshman and averaged 2.6 points and 2.2 rebounds
per contest. She scored six points and grabbed a team-best
six rebounds in first ever college game against Wichita State.
Frazier finished the 2000-01 season with 20 steals and shot
42% from the field.
Frazier
lettered in basketball at Manual High School in Denver, Colorado.
She averaged 15.2 points, 13.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per
game as a senior and was named Second Team All-State and
First Team All-City. Frazier also averaged a team-best 3.1
blocked shots per game and had a single game high of 22 rebounds.
She was a straight A student all four years of
high school. The daughter of Shirley Frazier of Denver, Kenyada
was born on January 10, 1982 and enjoys basketball, shopping
and talking on the phone in spare time.
Browning
is a 6'1 guard who played for two years at Texas Christian
University in Fort Worth, Texas. She saw action in 29 games
in 2003, starting in four, and helped guide the Horned Frogs
to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Browning averaged
3.4 points, 1.2 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game while scoring
a season-high nine points during two different contests.
She played in 30 of 31 games as a true freshman, seeing an
average of 10.7 minutes per contests while averaging 3.6
points and 1.3 rebounds per game. Browning finished third
on the team in three-pointers made (28) and had the second-best
percentage (.389) from long range in 2002. She posted a career-high
12 points on two occasions (vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
on Dec. 18 and vs. Houston on Jan. 13) and brought down a
career-best six rebounds in a career-high 22 minutes of play
against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Dec. 18, 2001.
Browning
was a three-year letterwinner at Plano East High School.
She was selected as both an AAU and a BCI All-American while
being recognized as a Christian Student-Athlete second-team
All-American. Browning was voted team MVP, district MVP,
First Team All-Region and First Team All-State in Class 5A
by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) and
the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) in 2001. As a
junior, she scored 15 points per game and hauled in eight
rebounds per contest and was voted district offensive player
of the year and Second Team All-State. Browning helped guide
her AAU team to a fourth place finish in the national tournament
in 2000 and recorded two Team Texas records for most points
(44) and rebounds (28) in a game. She was tabbed district
newcomer of the year as a sophomore and was a member of the
AAU Junior Olympic team in 1999. Born July 8, 1982, Ashley
is the daughter of Harvey and Tammy Browning of Plano, Texas.
She plans on studying nursing at TWU and enjoys listening
to music, shopping and participating in water sports in her
spare time.
Hartman
is a 6'3 post who transfers to TWU after spending two
years at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She played in 11 games
last season, averaging 3.2 minutes a game and helping the
Islanders to a 15-12 record. As a freshman, Hartman made
13 appearances and recorded 1.5 points and 0.6 rebounds in
4.2 minutes of action per contest. She shot .500 from the
floor and netted a career-high four points twice vs. Southeastern
Louisiana (12/1/02) and UT-Pan American (2/9/02). In High
school, Hartman averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds, 5.3 blocks
and 4.1 steals per game her senior campaign for Coach Teri
Morrison at Poteet High School. She led her team to a 16-10
mark and a district title and was named District 13-4A Offensive
Player of the Year, First Team All-District and Second Team
All-State in 2001. Hartman was one of 30 players in Class
5A and 4A to be chosen for the TABC All-Star game. As a junior,
she tallied 9 points, 3.2 blocks per game at Pampa High School
and was named Second Team All-District. Hartman also placed
third at regionals in the high jump in 2000 while going to
school at Pampa. She is the daughter of Keith Hartman and
Stephanie Rice of Canyon, TX.
