PIONEER
BASKETBALL HANDS TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE
78-71 LOSS
DENTON,
TXSparked by four players in double figures,
Texas Woman's University (9-15, 5-7 LSC) came from behind
to beat Texas A&M University-Kingsville (10-14, 3-9 LSC),
78-71, in the final home game of the 2002-03 season. With the
win, the Pioneers took the season series over the Javelinas
for the first time since the 1990-91 season. Jessica Springer
(Kirbyville, TX/Blinn College) led TWU in scoring with
16 points.
When you have four players in double figures in scoring,
you are doing something right. Jessica Springer made some key
shots and cleaned up the boards at the right time to allow
us to make a run in the second half and take control of the
game, head coach Devin Gabbard said. The team was
shaky in the beginning and we dug ourselves a hole, but the
girls came together and won the game as a team. The difference
in the game came in the second half when we starting attacking
Texas A&M-Kingsville offensively, causing foul trouble
for their big people inside.
Texas
A&M-Kingsville
(TAMU-K) built an 0-8 lead to start the first half before
TWU recorded its first points when Daphne
Lyons (Flower Mound, TX/Louisiana-Monroe) nailed a short
field goal. The Pioneers slowly chipped away at the lead and
knotted the game up for the first time, 13-13 at the 10:14
mark, when Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX/Paris J.C.) grabbed
a steal from Kristen Harrell and took it the distance for a
layup. A minute and a half later, Julie Prescher (Valley
View, TX/ Valley View H.S.) sank a three-pointer to give
the Pioneers their first lead of the game, 18-17. The Javelinas
roared right back with a six-minute, 15-1 run to make the score
19-32 with 2:12 left until half. Lyons scored six of TWU's
last eight points to close the gap, 27-33, at intermission.
The Pioneers shot just 22.6% from the field, but converted
12 of 16 attempts from the free throw line in the first period.
TWU started the second half very slowly, missing their first
eight field goal attempts. The Javelinas were up by 11 points
with 14:46 on the clock before the Pioneers went on a three-minute,
15-1 run to take their second lead of the game, 44-43. The
lead would change hands three more times until Meaghan Lewis
(Celeste, TX/Blinn College) hit a three pointer with
4:56 left to give TWU the lead for good, 61-59. Jessica Springer
pushed the Pioneer lead to seven points, 70-63, after she converted
a three point play. TWU hit eight of their final 11 free throws
to ice the victory, 78-71.
The Pioneers finished the game hitting 21 of 65 field goal
attempts (32.3%), six of 21 from beyond the arc (28.6%) and
30 of 39 (76.9%) from the stripe. Daphne Lyons chipped in with
15 points and shared Jessica Springer with nine rebounds apiece,
to lead the team. Keshun Irving (Karnack, TX/Tyler J.C.) and Lacey
Pemberton each scored 12 points with Irving recording
a game-high five steals. TAMU-K also had four players in double
figures with Kim Adams leading the way with a game-high 25
points.
Next
up, the Pioneers hit the road for their final two regular
season games of the 2002-03 season. TWU will face Abilene Christian
on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in a pivotal game
to see who earns the fourth and final spot from the South Division
in the Lone Star Conference tournament. Angelo State hosts
the Pioneers on Saturday, March 1 at 6 p.m. for the season
finale of both schools.
