PIONEER BASKETBALL
FALLS TO EASTERN NEW MEXICO AGAIN

NMFor the second time in six days,
Texas Woman's University (7-14, 3-6 lsc) lost to Eastern
New Mexico (5-16, 2-6 lsc) on the basketball court,
76-67. The Zias built an 11-0 lead in the first half and never
trailed during the game. They shot 41.3% from the field and
had five players in double-figures in scoring.
TWU missed their first eight shots and committed four turnovers
to allow Eastern New Mexico to build an 11-0 lead seven minutes
into the game. Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, Tx/Paris J.C.) ended
the Pioneers scoreless streak when scored on a short field
goal at the 13:12 mark. The Zias were 14 of 34 from the field
in the first half and built a 17-point lead, 28-11, after Jereena
Boske nailed a two-pointer. TWU ended the first half with a
20-9 run to close the ENMU lead to 37-31 at intermission. The
Zias controlled the paint, scoring 18 points, and scored 16
points from 10 offensive rebounds.
The
Pioneers opened the second half with a 6-2 run to close the
gap to 37-39 after two minutes. ENMU built a small eight
point lead three minutes later, but Meaghan Lewis (Celeste,
TX/Blinn College) hit two straight three-pointers to
close the gap back to two, 43-45. Jennifer Strebeck hit a three-pointer
of her own with 11:47 on the clock to end a 9-2 Zia run, making
the score 45-54. ENMU held their lead constant through most
of the second half, but Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX/
Valley View H.S.) hit one of two threes on the night with
1:41 left to close the gap to three, 64-67. TWU could only
score
three more points in the final minute as the Zias held on for
the 67-76 win.
TWU finished the game hitting 32.8% of their shots from the
field and 27.3% from beyond the arc. Jessica Springer (Kirbyville,
TX/Blinn College) and Meaghan Lewis tied for a game-high
16 points. Springer recorded her fourth double-double of the
year when she added 10 boards to her 16 points. Daphne Lyons
(Flower Mound, TX/Louisiana-Monroe) chipped in with 12
points and two blocks. Lewis recorded a season-high four three-pointers.

up, the Pioneers travel to Canyon, Texas, to play West Texas
A&M on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.
