PIONEER BASKETBALL LETS LEAD SLIP AWAY IN LOSS TO EASTERN NEW MEXICO

DENTON, TX—Texas Woman's University (7-13, 3-5 LSC) built a 13-point lead midway through the second half, but Eastern New Mexico (4-15, 1-5 LSC) came from behind to win the game, 70-68. The Pioneers lost the battle of the boards, 49-28, which allowed the Zias to score 17 second-effort points and take the win. TWU had three players in double-figures with Tiesha Wady (Cooper, TX/Tyler J.C.) leading the way with 13 points.

“Basically, this game came down to our inability to stay focused during key stretch runs. We got up by 13 points in the second half and we quit doing the things on the floor that got us to that point,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “Eastern New Mexico controlled the boards and that really hurt us in the outcome. Jessica Springer and Tiesha Wady really played well in the low post and Keshun Irving made some good baskets today. Our defensive play and lack of execution cost us a win.”

Eastern New Mexico built an 8-2 lead four minutes into the game before TWU woke up and scored eight unanswered points to a take their second lead of the game. Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX/Valley View H.S.) hit a three and Keshun Irving (Karnack, TX/Tyler J.C.) made a layup to make the score 15-10 in favor of the Pioneers at the 12:07 mark. The Zias quickly erased that lead with a three-minute, 12-1 run to make the score 16-22. Daphne Lyons (Flower Mound, TX/Louisiana-Monroe) sank two free throws with 5:57 showing on the clock to draw TWU within two, 24-26, but Eastern New Mexico went on anther short run to take a seven-point lead, 26-33 with three minutes left. Wady nailed a three at the 1:47 mark to bring the Pioneers within one, but the Zias' Loren Scarlett hit a three of her own to make the score 32-36 at halftime. There were three lead changes and four ties in the first frame. TWU hit 40% of their shots from the field and scored 11 points off of 11 Eastern New Mexico turnovers.

TWU tied the game for a fifth time, 36-36, early in the second half after Jessica Springer (Kirbyville, TX/Blinn College) sank two free throws and Meaghan Lewis (Celeste, TX/Blinn College) got her own offensive rebound and sank a short jumper. After Julie Prescher hit a field goal to knot the game up again, 41-41 with 13:12 on the clock, the Pioneers went on a 13-0 run to establish a 54-41 lead with nine minutes left. Eastern New Mexico would not roll over and die and slowly chipped away at the lead. Tia Doss ended a 23-10 ENMU run with a field goal, making the score 64-64 with 2:56 on the clock. The Zias hit four of their final six free-throw attempts and Laci Lee added a field goal to ice the win, 70-68.

Irving scored 11 points while Jessica Springer chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. Eastern New Mexico shot 44% from the field and was led in scoring by Elizabeth Richards, who recorded a game-high 14 points.
