NO. 13 ANGELO STATE DOWNS PIONEERS 67-58

DENTON, TX—Senior forward Jessica Springer (Kirbyville, TX/Blinn College) turned in her second-straight double-double performance, but it was not enough to lift Texas Woman's University (6-11, 2-3 LSC) over the No. 13 team in Division II. Angelo State (16-1, 4-0 LSC) won by the score of 67-58. Springer finished with 11 points and 11 boards while Tiesha Wady (Cooper, TX/Tyler J.C.) recorded a team-high 12 points.

“I was very pleased with the intensity and effort that the girls played with tonight. This game boiled down to missed opportunities at different times,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “In a close ball game like tonight, when you get out-rebounded by 14 and only hit seven of 20 from the free throw line, that is the difference between a win and a loss. Our execution during the second half was not very good and that hurt us as well.”

Wady hit the first field goal of the game, but Angelo State rattled off six straight points to build an early lead after two minutes of play. Jessica Springer made a short jumper, then Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX/Valley View H.S.) nailed a long two-pointer to give TWU back the lead, 10-7 and 14:33 showing on the clock. The Rambelles' Crystal Whalon connected on a layup to cap an 11-1 run, moving ASU out in front 11-18 with eight minutes left. The Pioneers would not go away and slowly chipped away at the lead. Springer converted a three-point play to bring TWU to within two, 21-23 with 3:35 left until half, but the Rambelles scored seven unanswered points to finish out the period. There were three lead changes and one tie during the first half. TWU shot 29% from the floor while ASU was good on 36.7 percent of their chances.

After the Rambelles scored the first basket to open the second half, TWU went on a 12-1 run, highlighted by two three-pointers from Julie Prescher, to knot the game up at 33 apiece. ASU's Crystal Whalon scored three quick points to move the Rambelles back on top, but Meaghan Lewis (Celeste, TX/Blinn College) nailed a three to tie the game again. Kami Williamson and Crystal Whalon both connected on three-pointers to give ASU a seven-point lead, 41-48, with 9:32 remaining. Wady hit two straight jumpers in a 9-4 run to bring TWU within two points, 50-52, but that was as close as they would come. ASU answered with five straight points to move their lead to seven with 4:31 remaining and road that lead the rest of the way, winning 58-67.

The Pioneers finished the game shooting 38% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc. Julie Prescher joined Springer and Wady in double figures in scoring with 10 points while Jennifer Ferrell (Flower Mound, TX/Paris J.C.) chipped in with three points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists. Angelo State shot 45% from the field and was led in scoring by Kami Williamson with 16. The Rambelles won the battle of the boards, 45-31, and converted 18 of 29 from the line while TWU struggled, hitting only seven of 20 attempts.

Next up, the Pioneers host Abilene Christian on Saturday at p.m. It will be Organ Donor Awareness Day in Kitty Magee Arena with former organ recipients in attendance to pass out information about becoming a donor.
