EAST CENTRAL ESCAPES WITH 47-44 WIN

DENTON, TX—Texas Woman's University (4-9) led 22-18 at halftime, but hit only eight shots in the second half and fell to East Central University (8-6) by the score of 47-44. The loss marked the fourth straight time the Pioneers have been beaten by the Lady Tigers. ECU's Stormy Griffith led all scorers with a game-high 18 points.

“In tonight's game, there were crucial points in the game that East Central went on a run and we did not respond. Our girls did a good job of keeping the ball out of the low post for most of the game, but during a stretch in the second half, we quit and let the ball go down low and Stormy Griffith took over the game,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “We made some poor decisions during the final stages of the game and it cost us.”

The Pioneers' Sonya Hodge (Eustace, TX/Paris J.C.) scored the game's first field goal 20 seconds into the first half when she received an assist from Meaghan Lewis (Celeste, TX/Blinn College). ECU then went on a 9-2 run, capped by Lindsay Furche's three-pointer, during the next six minutes to take a 9-4 lead. TWU battled back through most of the first half and knotted the game up at 12 after Daphne Lyons (Flower Mound, TX/ Louisiana-Monroe) nailed a short jumper with 6:22 showing on the clock. Three minutes later, Lauri Engleman (Jewett, TX/Leon H.S.) hit her only three-pointer of the game to give the Pioneers their second lead, making the score 16-14. Keshun Irving (Karnack, TX/Tyler J.C.) and Lyons both added layups to end the half with TWU on top, 22-18. TWU caused 19 ECU turnovers and converted them to 14 points while hitting 30% of their shots from the field.

It took the Lady Tigers only one minute to regain the lead in the second period after Griffith hit a short jumper and Rashaundra Singleton nailed a three. The Pioneers kept the game close and retook the lead when Lyons connected on another short jumper, making the score 29-28 with 14 minutes left. ECU answered with a 12-4, eight-minute run to build a seven point lead, 33-40 with 5:45 showing. Sonya Hodge capped a 6-0 run by the Pioneers by hitting a fall-away jumper to bring the score to within one point, 39-40 with 1:54 remaining in the game. The Lady Tigers made four straight free throws in the game's final minute and road their small lead all the way to the end, winning 44-47.

TWU finished the game by making 18 of 62 shots from the field for 29% while the Lady Tigers were 18 of 46 for 39.1%. The Pioneers turned the ball over a season-low 12 times, but lost the battle on the boards 42-37. Sonya Hodge led TWU in scoring with 13 points and tied Irving for the most rebounds with six. Lyons also recorded double-digits in scoring, chipping in 10 points.

Next up, the Pioneers host Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m. It will be "Take a Kid to the Game" day in Kitty Magee Arena, so if an adult buys a ticket, their kid gets in free.
