CENTRAL
OKLAHOMA HANDS PIONEERS THIRD STRAIGHT LOSS
EDMOND,
OKTexas Womans University (4-8) built a
10-point lead midway through the first period, but the
teams shooting touch didn't last, allowing Central
Oklahoma (6-7) to come back and win the game, 87-54.
The
Lady Bronchos had four players in double-figures with Kari
Edge leading the way with a game-high 22 points. The Pioneers
struggled to find the basket for the second game in a row,
making only 17 of 62 shots for 27.4%.
I
think our schedule finally caught up with us. We have played
six games in two weeks and the girls are tied, both mentally
and physically, head coach Devin Gabbard said. The
team started the game well, but Central Oklahoma was a physical
team and they wore us down. We didnt execute our offense
very well during the second half.
Central
Oklahoma built an early 8-4 lead after four minutes of play. Lacey
Pemberton (Hawkins, TX/Paris J.C.) and Meaghan Lewis
(Celeste, TX/Blinn College) each sank a three-pointer,
which sparked a six-minute 16-2 run by the Pioneers, giving
TWU the lead 20-10 with 10:45 showing on the clock. The Lady
Bronchos answered back with a 12-2 run of their own to knot
the game up at 22-22 with 7:13 left until halftime. TWU could
only manage one more field goal in the final seven minutes
and went into half down 37-24. The Pioneers converted eight
of 26 shots from the field and committed 13 turnovers in
the first period while UCO was 15 of 35 for 43%.
Both
teams started the second half very slow as they totaled nine
missed shots during the first three minutes. Keshun Irving
(Karnack, TX/Tyler J.C.) ended the Pioneers scoring drought
when she hit both of her free throws at the 15-minute mark,
making the score 41-26. After a three-pointer from Laura
Hamilton, Central Oklahoma quickly had a 20-point lead, 46-26,
and took control of the game. TWU was not finished yet as Lauri
Engleman (Jewett, TX/Leon H.S.) nailed two threes during
a 19-9 run and allowed the Pioneers to close the gap to 10
points, 55-45 with nine minutes left. That was as close as
TWU would get as the team went cold from the floor the rest
of the way, making only two of its final 12 shots. The Lady
Bronchos converted 12 of 13 free throws down the stretch
and made 45% of their field goals during the game.
Lewis,
Pemberton and Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX/Valley View
H.S.) each scored eight points apiece to pace the team.
Pemberton also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds while Irving
chipped in with six points, two assists and three steals.
Next
up, the Pioneers come home to host their final two Lone Star
Conference North Division crossover games. TWU plays East
Central University on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m., then faces
Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.
