NORTHEASTERN STATE OUT-SHOOTS PIONEERS

TAHLEQUAH, OK—Led by a game-high 22 points from Kelli Griffith, Lone Star Conference North Division front-runner Northeastern State (8-4) shot 53 percent from the field in an 81-53 win over Texas Woman's University (4-7). The Pioneers struggled to find their shot during the game, hitting 18 of 48 shots from the field for 37 percent. Lauri Engleman (Jewett, TX/Leon H.S.) led TWU in scoring by tying her season-high with 12 points, going 3 of 7 from three-point land.

“We came in very un-focused and didn't execute some of the assignments that we needed to on offense and defense. The team did not shoot the ball very well and we gave up too many easy buckets on the defensive end,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “We needed to win the battle on the boards by 10 or more and they did not do that, so it hurt us. We also had a lot of careless turnovers that showed me that this team was not focused on the game.”

Northeastern State opened the game with a 7-2 run in the first three minutes of play. Lauri Engleman brought the Pioneers to within three, 10-7, when she nailed her first three of the night. The Lady Reds' Kelli Griffith scored five points in a row to help lead an NSU 10-0 run to extend their lead to 10 points, 22-12 with seven minutes left until halftime. The Pioneers traded baskets with Northeastern State, but could never get closer than eight points. NSU went on a 9-0 run to finish the first half with the score 39-22. TWU shot 32% from the field in the first period and committed 10 turnovers while the Lady Reds converted on 14 of their 29 shots from the field.

Northeastern State opened the second period with three straight three-pointers and a two-point field goal by Lesli Warner to build a 22-point lead, 50-28, in the first two minutes. Brooke Stowers (Cooper, TX/Cooper H.S.) scored five-straight points and Jessica Springer (Kirbyville, TX/Blinn College) converted two free-throws in a 45 second stretch to make the score 63-37, but TWU was in too big of a hole to climb out of. Lauri Engleman was fouled shooting a three-pointer with three minutes left and made all her free throws to bring the NSU lead to 27 points, 75-48, but the Lady Reds ended the game with a 6-2 run to win by the score of 81-53.

TWU shot 41.7% from beyond the arc and were out-rebounded by only one board, 30-31. Northeastern State had three players in double-figures with Jenna Miller scoring 14 and Leslie Warner adding 10 to the 22 points scored by Kelli Griffith. The Pioneers' Brooke Stowers scored a season-high five points while Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX/Paris J.C.) added eight points and a team-high four rebounds.

Next up, the Pioneers continue their Lone Star Conference North Division crossover road-trip as they travel to Edmond, Okla. to face Central Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
