MIDWESTERN STATE DROPS TWU TO 0-2 IN CONFERENCE

DENTON, TX—Midwestern State (8-3, 2-0 LSC) scored 23 points off of 13 Texas Woman's University (4-6, 0-2 LSC) turnovers en route to a 74-63 victory. The loss drops the Pioneers to 0-2 in conference play and ends a three-game winning streak. Meaghan Lewis (Celeste, TX/Blinn College) led TWU with a season-high 17 points with 12 of those points coming from three-pointers.

“The team played well defensively tonight and showed a lot of intensity on the floor. We limited our turnovers and won the battle on the boards, the thing that hurt us was we didn't convert on some crucial shots when the opportunity arose,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “Meaghan Lewis and Lauri Engleman hit some big three-pointers for us during the game and Jessica Springer did a good job of controlling the boards. We just fell a little short tonight.”

Both teams exchanged two field goals in the games first three minutes before Midwestern State went on a 15-3 run, thanks in large part to Meosha Walker's two three-pointers, making the score 19-7 with 10:51 left until half. The Pioneers' Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX/Paris J.C.) hit two short jumpers and Lauri Engleman (Jewett, TX/Leon H.S.) nailed two three's in a minute and a half of play to bring the score to 17-20. The Lady Indians broke away again on a 12-3 run to extend their lead to 32-20 with 2:55 to play. Jessica Springer (Kirbyville, TX/Blinn College) hit a jumper and Meaghan Lewis chipped in with one of her four three-pointers on the night to close the first period with the score 25-34 in favor of Midwestern State. Both teams shot an identical 35% from the floor, but the Lady Indians made 10 of 13 free throws to give them the advantage at halftime.

Keshun Irving (Karnack, TX/Tyler J.C.) converted a layup off of a steal to end an 8-5 Pioneers run to start the second half and make the score 33-39. Midwestern State built their lead back up to 12 points before Meaghan Lewis hit a three-pointer which ended a 10-1 TWU run, making the score 43-46 with 10:05 remaining. After four straight free throws and two field goals by Jel-ani Armstrong, the Lady Indians had built their largest lead of the game, 16 points with six minutes left to go. The Pioneers chipped away at the lead, closing the gap to nine points, 61-70, but that was as close as they would come. Meosha Walker hit two late free throws to ice the win for Midwestern State, 63-74.

Lauri Engleman was the only other Pioneer in double-figures in scoring as she chipped in with 12 points, all coming from three-pointers. Jessica Springer finished with a season and game-high 14 boards to go along with her seven points and four assists while Jennifer Ferrell (Flower Mound, TX/Paris J.C.) finished with a game-high six assists. TWU finished the game shooting 34.2% from the field and 30% from beyond the arc, but it was free throws that hurt them as they only converted five of 13 attempts. Midwestern State had three players in double-figures, with Jel-ani Armstrong leading the way with a game-high 19 points.

Next up, the Pioneers hit the road for two conference crossover games at Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma. Their game against NSU is on Thursday, Jan. 9 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and the contest with UCO is on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Edmond, Oklahoma. Both games have a start time of 7 p.m.
