PIONEERS END SEVEN-GAME LOSING STREAK TO
TARLETON STATE

DENTON, TX—Led by a season-high 12 points and 13 rebounds from Jessica Springer (Kirbyville, TX/Blinn College), Texas Woman's University (4-5, 0-1 LSC) ended a three-year losing drought by handing Tarleton State (4-6, 0-0 LSC) a 68-54 loss. The last time TWU recorded a victory over TSU was Dec. 31, 1998 when the Pioneers won at home 49-44. The win also marks the first time since the 1998-99 season when the Pioneers won three games in a row.

“This was a great win for TWU today. We knew we had to be physical on both sides of the floor and come out of the blocks quickly,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “Two keys to our victory were turnovers and rebounding. We committed less than 20 turnovers and out-rebounded Tarleton State 61 to 36. We had a full team effort on the floor with 10 of our players scoring at least two points.”

TWU broke the game wide open after the tip-off as the Pioneers went on a 16-0 run during the first four minutes to take a commanding lead, which was highlighted by two three-pointers from Meaghan Lewis (Celeste, TX/Blinn College). With the score 25-9 at the 9:55 mark, Tarleton St. made a four-minute 8-0 run to close the gap to eight points. The Pioneers answered back as Jennifer Ferrell (Flower Mound, TX/ Paris J.C.) made two field goals to give TWU another 16-point advantage, 37-21, with less than a minute left until halftime. The TexAnns' Melissa Fuller made a short jumper with three seconds remaining to make the score 37-23 at the half. The Pioneers' shot 42 percent from the field in the first period and converted seven turnovers to seven points.

Both teams exchanged buckets during the first part of the second half, but Tarleton St. managed to cut the lead to 13 points, 44-31, with 12:18 showing on the clock. That was as close as they would come for the rest of the game. Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX/Valley View H.S.) nailed a three to make the score 59-43 in favor of the Pioneers after Lauri Engleman (Jewett, TX/Leon H.S.) got an offensive rebound off of a Springer missed free throw. Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX/Paris J.C.) made two free-throws with 3:15 left to go in the game to give TWU its biggest lead of the game, 21 points, 67-46. Tarleton St. closed the game with an 8-1 run, but it was too little too late as the Pioneers won the game, 68-54.

Lacey Pemberton recorded the Pioneers' second double double of the game as she chipped in with 11 points and a season-high 10 boards. Jennifer Ferrell led the team with four assists and added seven points and three rebounds. TWU shot 33% from the field, making 23 of 69 shots, and was 25% from three-point land. The Pioneers recorded 14 points off of 17 Tarleton St. turnovers and got 30 points from its bench players. Casey Davies led Tarleton St. in scoring with 16 points.

Next up, the Pioneers continue their home stand when they play host to Midwestern State in their second conference game of the season. The game is scheduled for Monday, January 6 at 7 p.m. The Lady Indians handed TWU an 87-67 loss in Wichita Falls on Nov. 30.
