PIONEERS ON A TWO-GAME ROLL

DENTON, TX—Five Pioneers recorded double-digits in scoring to help propel Texas Woman's University (3-5, 0-1 LSC) to a 92-68 victory over St. Edward's University in Kitty Magee Arena. The 92 points scored are a season-high for the Pioneers and moved the team's record to 2-0 at home this season. Sonya Hodge (Eustace, TX/Paris J.C.) turned in TWU's first double-double of the season as she led the team with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

“Sonya played an exceptional game tonight. She got off to a really good start and made some really great decisions on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor that got our team some great looks at the basket,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “This was probably the best half-court man-to-man defense that we have played all year. The team also did a good job of being patient on offense and looking for the best opportunity to score.”

The game was close in the early going as both teams turned the ball over three times in the first two minutes. Daphne Lyons (Flower Mound, TX/Louisiana-Monroe) hit two field goals to give the Pioneers a 9-4 lead with 16 minutes left in the first half. St. Edward's battled back and knotted the game up 13-13 when Jeanette Vlasak nailed a short jumper. With the game tied for a sixth time, 19-all at the 9:16 mark, TWU's Meaghan Lewis (Celeste, TX/Blinn College) hit a three-pointer and Tiesha Wady (Cooper, TX/Tyler J.C.) made two steals and converted easy layups to push the Pioneers' lead to seven (26-19) with eight minutes left. TWU built an eight-point lead later in the period when Lewis hit her second triple of the game, making the score 39-31. The Pioneers went into halftime leading, 39-36. They shot 50 percent from the field and converted 12 St. Edward's turnovers into 13 points.

It was all TWU in the second half as the Pioneers opened up the final period with a five-minute, 13-5 run to extend their lead to 53-38. Lewis and Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX/Paris J.C.) each nailed three-pointers to build TWU's lead to 24 points (69-45) with 10:34 showing on the clock. St. Edward's could never close the gap to less than 20 points as the Pioneers ran off with a 92-68 victory. The Hilltoppers actually out-shot TWU in field goal percentage, making 24 of 45 for 53 percent while the Pioneers converted 31 of 66 for 47 percent shooting. The Pioneers controlled the boards, grabbing 43 rebounds to St. Edward's 23.

The four other Pioneers in double-figures in scoring were Lyons with 15, Wady with 14 and a team-high four steals, Keshun Irving (Karnack, TX/Tyler J.C.) with 12 and Lewis turning in a season-high 12 points. There were six ties and two lead changes in the game. TWU had the edge in points in the paint (16-12), second effort points (14-4) and three-point points (21-12).

Next up, the Pioneers host Tarleton State in a Lone Star Conference North Division crossover game. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 4.
