PIONEERS GET REVENGE ON SOUTHERN ARKANSAS, WINNING 62-47 IN FIRST HOME GAME

DENTON, TX—Texas Woman’s University (2-5) got some revenge this afternoon when the Pioneers handed Southern Arkansas (4-5) a 62-47 loss in front of 145 loud fans in Kitty Magee Arena. TWU loss to the Riderettes two weeks ago, 51-67, in Magnolia, Ark. Three Pioneers recorded double-figures on the day with Daphne Lyons (Flower Mound, TX/Louisiana-Monroe) leading the team with a season-high 20 points and seven rebounds.

“It is great to be back at home playing in our own gym. We had a great crowd today and when the momentum of the second half came our way, they really got behind us and helped our team onto victory,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “Daphne Lyons and Lacey Pemberton played great down low for us today, which allowed our shooters to be open on the perimeter. Julie Prescher made two key baskets down the stretch and made a good defensive block to allow us to open up our lead late in the game.”

Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX/Paris J.C.) gave TWU the first lead of the game when she nailed a jumper on an assist from Sonya Hodge (Eustace, TX/Paris J.C.) two minutes into the game, 2-0. SAU’s Kelly Preston hit two three-pointers to allow the Riderettes to move ahead 9-7 at the 13-minute mark. The game was close for most of the first half, but the Pioneers finally clawed their way back to a tie, 20-20 with three minutes left to go in the first half, when Daphne Lyons sank two free throws. After two more baskets apiece, TWU and Southern Arkansas went into halftime tied at 24. The Pioneers shot 40% from the field and scored six points off of six SAU turnovers.

Southern Arkansas jumped out to a five-point lead, 24-29, to begin the second half after Stacy Stockton made two free throws and Desheka Porchia hit a three-pointer. TWU regained the lead, 31-30 with 13:17 on the clock, when Daphne Lyons scored two layups in a row. With the game tied for a sixth time 35-35 at the 11-minute mark, the Pioneers went on a 17-2 run during the next six minutes, highlighted by two three-pointers from Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX/Valley View H.S.), to put the game away 52-37. Keshun Irving (Karnack, TX/Tyler J.C.) hit another three-pointer and TWU made their final seven free throws to win the game, 62-47.

The Pioneers finished the game shooting 38.9% from the field and 28.6% from beyond the arc while holding the Riderettes to 30% from the field. TWU scored 14 points off of 18 Southern Arkansas turnovers and recorded 33 points from bench players. Keshun Irving turned in a season-high 11 points while Tiesha Wady (Cooper, TX/Tyler J.C.) chipped in with 10 points. Irving also posted a game-high four steals and tied Lyons with seven boards to lead the game.

Next up, the Pioneers host St. Edward’s University on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m. for Denton Record-Chronicle Free Family Night. Anyone who cuts out a coupon that is running in the DR-C will receive free admission to the game for themselves and their family.
