PIONEERS FALL TO SOUTHERN ARKANSAS 67-51

MAGNOLIA, Ark.—Texas Woman's University (1-5, 0-1 conf.) struggled to find their shooting touch in a 51-67 loss to Southern Arkansas. The Riderettes held TWU to just 31.7% shooting from the field while SAU recorded a .482 field goal percentage and had three players in double-figures with Stacy Stockton leading the way with a game-high 22 points.

The Pioneers took the first lead of the game when Tiesha Wady (Cooper, TX/Tyler J.C.) connected on a layup with 18:26 showing on the clock, 3-0. Southern Arkansas knotted the game up 3-3 and then took their first lead of the game when Valeri Turner hit a three-pointer two minutes later. Three straight TWU turnovers allowed the Riderettes to expand their lead to 10-6, but the Pioneers battled back and tied the game up for a second time when Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX/Paris J.C.) scored on a putback. Southern Arkansas turned up the pressure and went on a 23-10 run to end the first half with a 33-20 lead. The Riderettes hit 47% of their field goals and were 3 of 6 from beyond the arc while limiting the Pioneers to 8 of 29 shooting from the field and 1 of 8 from three-point land.

TWU began the second half with a six-minute, 13-6 run to bring the game to within six points, 33-39. Southern Arkansas quickly jumped back to a 10-point lead, 43-33, when Shayla Canady nailed a jumper. The Pioneers closed the gap to seven points when Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX/Valley View H.S.) hit a short field goal, making the score 45-38 with 10:36 left, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the game. Meah Biley hit a layup on a fast-break to give Southern Arkansas their biggest lead of the game, 64-47, with two minutes left and the Riderettes road that lead to the end, winning the game 67-51.

The Pioneers hit 19 of their 60 shots from the field, including 3 of 19 from beyond the arc. Tiesha Wady led TWU in scoring with 11 points and tied LaTonya Johnson (Paris, TX/Paris J.C.) with a team-high five boards. Keshun Irving (Karnack, TX/ Tyler J.C.) recorded a game-high five steals to go along with her six points. The Pioneers grabbed 37 rebounds and turned in 10 assists, 22 turnovers and 11 steals.

Next up, the Pioneers have two weeks off before they open with their first home game of the season in a rematch against Southern Arkansas on Saturday, Dec. 28. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
