SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA DOWNS PIONEERS IN OVERTIME

WEATHERFORD, OK—Texas Woman's University (1-4, 0-1 conf.) had a four-point lead with :36 seconds left, but four straight points by Southwestern Oklahoma State's (5-2) Kayla Horn pushed the game into overtime. In the extra period, the Lady Bulldogs outscored TWU, 14-5, with 66.7% shooting from the field to take the game 80-71. The Pioneers' Sonya Hodge (Eustace, TX/Paris J.C.) recorded a team season-high 26 points in the loss.

“We led for most of the game, but some poor execution and costly turnovers caused us to lose the lead toward the end of regulation. Southwestern Oklahoma came out firing in the overtime and beat us,” head coach Devin Gabbard said. “I was pleased with our level of play tonight. The girls are getting better each and every time we hit the floor and it won't be long before those loses turn to wins. Sonya Hodge played great tonight, going 11 of 17 from the field with 26 points.”

The game was very close in the first 10 minutes as each team exchanged the lead five times before the Pioneers took control at the 10:00 minute-mark when Tiesha Wady (Cooper, TX/Tyler J.C.) made a jumper to make the score 19-17. TWU went on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to a game-high 12 points, 29-17, with seven minutes left in the half. Southwestern chipped away and went into halftime down five, 35-30, thanks to a three-pointer from Niki Sloan at the buzzer. The Pioneers shot 41% from the field in the first period, hitting 13 of 31 shots while holding the Lady Bulldogs to 2 of 8 shooting from beyond the arc.

In the second half, TWU opened their lead up to nine points, 50-41 at the 13:01 mark when Sonya Hodge capped off a 15-11 run with a short jumper. The lead was 10 points with eight minutes left when Southwestern started climbing back into the game. The Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 62-62 when Paige Adams hit a jumper with 1:49 left on the clock. Hodge added two free throws and Meaghan Lewis (Celeste, TX/Blinn College) nailed a jumper to give the Pioneers a 66-62 lead with :36 seconds left. But a costly foul by Keshun Irving (Karnack, TX/Tyler J.C.) allowed Kayla Horn to complete a three-point play, making the score 66-65. Hodge fouled Horn again with :16 seconds left. She converted one free throw to move the game into overtime. In the extra period, Southwestern hit 4 of 6 shots from the field and made all six of their free throw opportunities to win the game, 80-71.

The Pioneers finished the game hitting 27 of their 74 shots from the field for 36.5% and were 61% from the charity stripe. They out-rebounded Southwestern 51 to 46 on the boards and totaled seven assists, 18 turnovers, one block and nine steals. Tiesha Wady was the Pioneers second leading scorer with 13 points and six rebounds. Jessica Springer (Kirbyville, TX/Blinn College) led the team with eight rebounds while Keshun Irving had a team-high three assists. Southwestern Oklahoma had three players in double-figures with Kiki McClellan leading the way with 18 points.

Next up, the Pioneers enjoy a week off before they travel to Magnolia, Arkansas to face Southern Arkansas on Friday, Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. TWU has never faced the Riderettes on the basketball court.
