PIONEERS DOWN INCARNATE
WORD 69-66 TO END TOURNEY
ABILENE,
TX—Texas Woman's University (1-1) played
tough defensively and shot 41% from the field to give Incarnate
Word (0-2) their second loss of the Abilene Christian Classic,
69-66. Tiesha Wady (Cooper, TX/Tyler J.C.) led the
Pioneers with 13 points while Jessica Springer (Kirbyville,
TX/Blinn College) and Lauri Engleman (Jewett, TX/Leon
H.S.) each chipped in with 11 points.
“I was very happy with the way the team played today
and it was good to get our first win of the season,” head
coach Devin Gabbard said. “The girls played great defensively
and were very patient on offense.”
Incarnate Word jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but TWU battled
back and took a 30-23 lead into the half. The game was very
close in the second half as each team flip-flopped the lead.
The Pioneers were up seven with a minute left to go in the
contest, but the Crusaders fought back to within one point
with nine seconds on the clock, 67-66. TWU ran an inbounds
play to Meaghan Lewis (Celeste, TX/Blinn College), who
was fouled with one second left on the clock. She sank both
free throws and iced the game for the Pioneers, 69-66.
Next up, the Pioneers travel to Lawton, Oklahoma to face Lone
Star Conference North Division member Cameron University on
Tuesday, Nov. 26. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
