Head Coach: Shelly Barberee
In 2005, the Texas Woman’s University volleyball program made its third consecutive trip to the postseason under Barberee, who enters her fourth year as head coach. The Pioneers finished the 2005 season with a 17-19 overall record and 8-4 mark in the Lone Star Conference.
As the second seed from the North division, TWU beat Texas A&M-Kingsville in four games before bowing out of the postseason tournament in the semifinals with a three-game loss to Abilene Christian.
Additionally, TWU put three players on the all-conference team including a first- and second team pick and the Freshman of the Year. Three players were selected for academic accolades with one to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-District VI College Division second team as well.
Barberee has continued to make the Pioneers a force in the LSC as they have posted their best overall and league records since 1997.
In 2004, TWU finished third in the North and placed four players on the all-conference team. Five players earned academic honors including one being named to the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-District VI College Division first team.
Barberee earned Lone Star Conference Division North Division Coach of the Year honors in 2003 when the squad finished as North Division Tri-Champions. Additionally, she coached six All-Conference selections, more than any other school in the Lone Star Conference.
Barberee came to TWU from Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas, where she turned in a 202-81 record and led the Lady Rebels to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national tournament in 1999 and 2001. Barberee guided Hill College to four straight conference championships from 1999-2002 and made it to the Region V finals each of those four seasons. In 2002, the Lady Rebels went 12-0 in the NTJCAC and 38-8 overall. She was twice named Region V Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2001. She produced 18 All-Region athletes, eight Academic All-Americans and four NJCAA All-Americans at Hill College.
Barberee is currently a lecturer for TWU’s Kinesiology department. She spent two years as the Kinesiology Division Director at Hill, advising all Hill College Kinesiology students and scheduling all Health and Kinesiology classes for both the Hillsboro and Johnson County campuses. She instructed numerous subjects in her six years at Hill, such as CPR/First Aid, Volleyball/Tennis, Sports Officiating, Weight training, Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries and Lifetime Sports.
Barberee earned her Masters of Education in 1997 and her Bachelor of Science in 1994 at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. While at SFA, she worked as an athletic trainer for basketball, football, soccer and softball teams.
