ATHLETIC TRAINING STUDENTS
The
athletic training students at Texas Woman’s University
serve as an invaluable resource to the professional staff.
The students, with their dedication and many hours of hard
work, help to provide the highest quality of care for our athletes.
The majority of our athletic training students begin their
experience in the training room as freshmen or sophomores.
Their initial project is to observe and interact with the professional
staff and other students in order to make themselves both knowledgeable
and comfortable with the procedures set forth by the Sports
Medicine staff. They are given opportunities to interact with
coaches and players, to evaluate and treat injuries and to
travel. The experiences gained as part of the Sports Medicine
staff are ones that will be with them for many years after
graduation.
In addition to their weekly scheduled work times, the entire
staff gets together once a week for a short educational session.
Different topics for presentation are chosen for each session
with an emphasis being placed on interactive and hands-on learning.
Many methods of teaching are utilized during these sessions
including: lecture, discussion, videos, handouts, games, and
demonstrations. The professional staff tries to make the presentations
fun and interesting while still accomplishing their goal of
learning.
After completing their individual observation time, the athletic
training student is then either given a team to work more specifically
with, or given higher duties within the clinic. The athletic
training student's placement is up to the discretion of the
professional staff based on performance, enthusiasm, and compatibility
with assigned area. There is no emphasis put on any sport or
athletic training student position at TWU. Every individual
sport has its own inherent needs based on the number of athletes
within that sport, injury rates, and travel. The current student
staff is excellent. They have proven that they are an invaluable
asset to TWU Sports Medicine.
