TWU STUDENT-ATHLETES HONORED AT YEAR-END BANQUET
Flores Wins 2003-04 President’s Award

DENTON, Tex. – Texas Woman’s University Intercollegiate Athletics recognized its five varsity sports Sunday afternoon at its annual awards banquet. Individuals and teams were honored for their athletic and academic accomplishments in basketball, gymnastics, soccer, softball, volleyball as well as athletic training.

The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of the 2003-04 President’s Award by TWU Chancellor and President Dr. Ann Stuart. Senior softball player Teresa Flores (Corpus Christi, TX) won the award which recognizes outstanding excellence in their sport, in the classroom and in the promotion of TWU Athletics. Flores leads the Pioneers in hitting, holds several school records, and has won numerous Regional, Conference and tournament awards for both academics and athletics. The Kinesiology major also participates in various extracurricular activities.

Three other Pioneer student-athletes were nominated for the award: senior Julie Prescher (Valley View, TX) - a four-year letterwinner in basketball; senior Heather Smith (Chino Hills, CA) - a four-year letterwinner for the volleyball team; and sophomore Sara Weaver (Prosper, TX) - two-year letterwinner as the soccer team’s goalkeeper.

The Kitty Magee Award, recognizing the most dedicated student-athlete, was given to senior basketball player Lacey Pemberton (Hawkins, TX) and junior volleyball player Melanie Pabalate (Fort Worth, TX). The Jo Kuhn Award, which honors outstanding leadership, was given to senior volleyball player Marci Brinkman (Carrollton, TX). The athletic trainers selected sophomore soccer player Melissa Williams (Arlington, TX) for their Golden Cast Award, an honor given to the athlete who is the most conscientious about the treatment and rehabilitation of her injuries.

“Once again, I think today’s banquet was the perfect way to acknowledge the achievements of TWU Athletics and our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” TWU Director of Athletics Chalese Connors said. “We are also thankful for the opportunity to say thank you to those individuals who tirelessly support the program.”

Outstanding Athlete Awards were given to an outstanding individual in each sport: Brinkman (volleyball), Prescher (basketball), senior gymnast Dana Giametta (Brookshire, TX), and freshman soccer player Emily Meinen (Keller, TX). Flores shared the Outstanding Athlete Award for softball with senior classmates Nikki Boudreaux (Orange, TX), Jennifer Collins (Forney, TX) and Dawn England (Graham, TX). The Outstanding Student Trainer Award was given to Debra Motch (Austin, TX).
