PIONEERS PICK UP A PAIR OF WINS AT THE EXTENDED STAY DELUXE INVITATIONAL
TWU 3, Harding 1 - Box Score
TWU 3, Ohio Valley 0 - Box Score
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (August 29) – The Texas Woman’s University volleyball team opened their 2008 season in fine fashion on Friday afternoon by winning matches against Harding University and Ohio Valley University at the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational in Anchorage, Alaska.
A thorough team effort helped the Pioneers to a 25-20, 8-25, 25-21, 25-23 win over Harding in their first match of the day. Two TWU seniors – outside hitter Katie King and right side hitter Sharon Schaffner – had seven kills apiece in the win. Two freshmen – outside hitter Hayley Summers and middle blocker Katelyn Osborne – chipped in with six kills each. Osborne and senior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder also played well defensively, totaling four block assists apiece. Schaffner was also effective on her side of the net, registering three block assists and 11 digs. Junior setter Jessica Crow directed the TWU offense efficiently by tossing up 25 assists.
TWU head coach Shelly Barberee was very pleased with her team’s four-set victory over the Lady Bisons.
“Harding is an excellent volleyball team,” said Barberee. “They went 25-9 last season and won the Gulf South Conference West Division. My players rose to the challenge and played well. It certainly wasn’t the prettiest match, but we did what we needed to do to come out on top.”
The Pioneers followed up their victory against Harding with a 25-8, 25-20, 25-23 straight-set win over Ohio Valley University. Sophomore LyGene’ Traylor paced the Pioneers’ offensive attack against the Fighting Scots with eight kills on 15 swings. Another TWU sophomore, outside hitter Danielle Veitenheimer, put down seven balls on only 11 attacks (a .545 hitting percentage). True freshman Arden Richardson, a defensive specialist, recorded a match-high 14 digs.
Next up for the Pioneers (2-0) will be a 2:00 p.m. (CST) match on Saturday afternoon against the tourney’s host team, the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves. TWU will then wrap up the two-day, four-team tournament by playing in either the championship match or consolation match at 5:00 or 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night.
