PIONEERS SWEEP ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO BUT FALL TO OUACHITA BAPTIST
DENTON, Texas (September 8) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers volleyball team recorded one win and one loss on the second day of the TWU Volleyball Tournament being played at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.
The Pioneers first match of the day resulted in a three-game victory over the University of Arkansas-Monticello, 30-24, 30-27, 30-24. A pair of upperclassmen, junior outside hitter Katie King and senior outside hitter Kasye Richmond, paced the TWU offense in the match with 12 and 8 kills respectively. Richmond also posted a double-double with 12 digs in the match. Freshman setter Sydney Veitenheimer, filling in for the injured Jessica Crow, TWU’s top setter, enjoyed her best match as a collegian with 24 assists, three service aces, six digs and two block assists. TWU also benefited in the win from a sloppy service performance by Arkansas-Monticello. The Blossoms hurt themselves with 15 total service errors.
TWU head coach Shelly Barberee called the win over Arkansas-Monticello an efficient effort.
“We played good ball,” she explained. “We did what we had to do to win. I liked the fact that we jumped on them early, and despite the fact that we made a few mistakes, we never let them steal the momentum and get back in the match. That was a solid win.”
In their final match of the tournament against Ouachita Baptist University, TWU raced out to an early lead by winning the first two games, 30-25, 30-27. The Pioneers, however, faltered, and OBU roared back to win the final three games, 30-26, 30-23, 15-13.
“We got tired, and just flat-out ran out of gas,” said Barberee. “Once fatigue hit us, we just made too many mistakes, and they were able to capitalize. The disappointing part for me is that we had them down, but we couldn’t finish.”
Middle blocker Breanne Garret was the catalyst in the rally for OBU. The senior from Garland registered a match-high 26 kills in 47 swings to account for the majority of the Tigers offense. Garret was at her best in the decisive fifth game when she hammered down 7 kills. Her impressive performance against the Pioneers helped Garret walk away with tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
“She’s a heck of a player,” said Barberee of Garret. “She took advantage of the chances she had and really made us pay. We couldn’t do anything to slow her down.”
Four TWU players – Richmond, Schroeder, freshman outside hitter Alyson Harlan, and freshman middle blocker LyGene’ Traylor – totaled 13 kills in the loss to OBU. Sydney Veitenheimer did her part as well with 66 assists while senior defensive specialist Heather Marcus added 31 digs.
Up next for the Pioneers, now 6-6 on the season, will be their 2007 Lone Star Conference opener on Thursday, September 13, at 7:00 p.m. in Wichita Falls, Texas against Midwestern State University.
