TWU SPLITS ON FIRST DAY OF TOURNAMENT

DENTON, Texas (September 7) The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers split two matches on Friday at the TWU Tournament being played at Kitty Magee Arena in Denton.

In their first match of the day, TWU defeated Arkansas Tech in four games, 25-30, 30-27, 30-24, 30-21. Junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder was the star in the win for the Pioneers as she totaled 14 kills on 22 swings for a blistering .591 hitting percentage. Schroeder (pictured) received plenty of support from her teammates, specifically junior right side hitter Sharon Schaffner (16 kills) and senior outside hitter Katie King (19 kills). Sophomore setter Jessica Crow chipped in with 48 assists and senior defensive specialist Heather Marcus did her part with 26 digs. Senior outside hitter Kasye Richmond contributed as well with 5 service aces.

TWU head coach Shelly Barberee was thrilled with her team’s effort against Arkansas Tech.

“That was by far our best match of the season,” she said. “We were intense, we played hard, and we hit on all cylinders. Our energy was up for the entire match and we were able to work together and defeat a very good Arkansas Tech team.”

Unfortunately for the Pioneers, they could not carry the momentum from their win over Arkansas Tech into their next match against Dallas Baptist University.

DBU swept past TWU on their home court, 31-29, 30-23, 30-23. Junior outside hitter Lauren Secord paced the Patriots with 15 kills and 5 total blocks. King was the only Pioneer player to reach double figures in kills (11). The Pioneers offensive attack struggled mightily without the services of Crow, who did not play in the match because of an injury suffered earlier in the day against Arkansas Tech.

“We just didn’t have it,” was how Barberee explained the Pioneers loss to Dallas Baptist. “We played flat the entire match and never really got anything going.”

The defeat to DBU dropped the Pioneers season record to 5-5.

TWU will now turn their attention to Saturday, September 8, when the eight-team, two-day tournament continues. The Pioneers will face the University of Arkansas-Monticello at 12:00 p.m. and then meet Ouachita Baptist University at 5:00 p.m.
