TARLETON STATE TAKES DOWN TWU

Box Score

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (September 29) The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers volleyball team had their three-match winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon as they lost in four games (30-27, 20-30, 31-29, 30-18) to the Tarleton State University TexAnns.

The defeat, TWU’s first since Thursday, September 13, at Midwestern State, drops the Pioneers record to 9-8 overall, 3-2 in Lone Star Conference play. With the win, Tarleton improves to 9-10 on the season, 3-3 in the conference.

Sophomore outside hitter Missy Castro (16 kills, 18 digs) and junior middle blocker Alisha Bourgo (15 kills, 13 digs) both recorded double-doubles in the match for the TexAnns. Sophomore middle blocker Emily Richardson was also a major contributor for TSU as she finished with three service aces and six total blocks.

Junior right-side hitter Sharon Schaffner was a bright spot in the loss for the Pioneers. Schaffner posted a double-double of her own with 11 kills and 15 digs. Junior outside hitter Katie King (22 kills) and junior middle blocker Kandis Schroeder (9 kills, 7 total blocks) also played well for TWU.

TWU head coach Shelly Barberee said it was her team’s inconsistent play that led to the defeat.

“We were on a rollercoaster today, up and down, up and down. We had moments where we played well, but then we had moments where we played bad. We were unable to sustain any type of strong play or momentum, and that’s what ultimately cost us the match,” she stated.

The loss was TWU’s first to TSU since September 17, 2005. The Pioneers beat the TexAnns three times in 2006. TWU is now 22-9 all time against their conference foes from Stephenville.

Next up for TWU will be a non-conference opponent, the Dallas Baptist University Patriots, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2, at Kitty Magee Arena in Pioneer Hall.
