KING CARRIES PIONEERS TO FIVE-GAME WIN OVER SOSU

Box Score

DENTON, Texas (September 22)A 22-kill effort by junior outside hitter Katie King carried the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a hard-fought five-game win over the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm on Saturday afternoon, 30-19, 25-30, 30-24, 27-30, 15-11.

King, a native of Kaufman, Texas, was at her best midway through the decisive fifth game when she registered three kills in a row for TWU to put the momentum squarely on the Pioneers side.

“I wanted to step up and help our team,” said King. “Our defense started to make a few plays and Jessica (Crow, the Pioneers setter) was giving me great balls to hit. I’m glad I could do my part to get us the win.”

King (pictured) finished the match with a .391 hitting percentage (22 kills on 46 total attacks). Her classmate, right side hitter, Sharon Schaffner, chipped in with 12 kills on 29 attempts. Freshman LyGene’ Traylor and junior Kandis Schroeder also played well at the net for TWU with 9 and 8 kills respectively. Traylor and Schroeder each added four block assists to the Pioneers cause.

Crow, who is still recovering from a thumb injury, played a strong match and finished 53 assists. Senior defensive specialist Heather Marcus led the Pioneers defense with a match-high 29 digs.

SOSU received impressive performances in defeat from sophomore outside hitter Destiny Brown (23 kills), senior libero Laura Bienmueller (24 digs), and junior setter Lindsay Ellisor (56 assists).

TWU head coach Shelly Barberee credited her team for doing what they needed to do in order to win the match.

“It wasn’t pretty, that’s for sure. We’re still on a rollercoaster (this season) and trying to find some consistency. During this match, we had stretches of outstanding play and stretches of bad play,” explained Barberee. “I’ve got to hand it to my team though, when it came down to fifth game, we found a way to win. Katie put away some big points for us and Sharon delivered a few big plays. I’m relieved to come out of this one with a win.”

The conference victory by the Pioneers improves their overall season record to 8-7 and their mark in Lone Star Conference play to 2-1. SOSU falls to 4-10 overall and 0-4 in LSC play.

TWU will return to court next Thursday, September 27, when they travel to Kingsville, Texas to take on Texas A&M University-Kingsville at 7:00 p.m. in a Lone Star Conference match.
